Rattlers

Just wanted to give another heads up to anyone heading to the Lower Deschutes for trout in the near future. I got reports this week of there being a handful around ( as to be expected ) but I've been here for 4 hours and we've encountered two. One was about 3-4 ft, that I nearly stepped on...

Tight lines~

No problem. Just grab them behind the head like John Wayne and fling 'em.

Better yet. Kill them, skin them, pee in it and save it for later when you need a drink, then harass a bees nest until you get stung in the face and your eyes swell shut. Just like Bear Grylls.

I'm making a survey of places where I would (a) fly fish, (b) not need/want to gear fish, and (iii) not have to deal with snakes.

Depending on how big that intersection is, and how far away it is, and how much it overlaps with other fishing I'd already want to do, I may yet get talked into it.

Dang Mark that was quick...........LOL...........I'll walk point for you, the trick is to sing, kick rocks and logs before stepping over or on them. Make lots of noise and they will DIDI before you even get close. I grew up over in Rattler country and have never had a problem. Now a 10 foot Cobra in a bunker that's a different story!

Exactly what I do. Stomp and try to avoid as much tall grass as possible; they will most often voluntarily choose to avoid you by ditching out of the area long before you get there. However, I don't think singing does anything because snakes have no ears and 'hear' by vibration.

As for cobras...no advice here. But, I really don't think it's much a problem....but ya never know...invasive species and such ;) LOL

So singing sympathy for the Devil doesn't help?

'Highway to hell' works better. I grew up around lots of rattlers, never had no worries about them, don't like the idea of water moccasins though...

Most often, the person who gets bitten is the ones who mess with them. Yes, they are afraid of you more than you are off then, and given the chance, they will go the other way. And yes, they only hear by vibrations (as was stated earlier). As far as the BBQ, yes, they taste good, but if you are the type that foregoes certain fish because they are too boney, then snack may not be your ideal snack.

I was a math major a loooong time ago but one thing I remember is that "most" is the same as "not all", which means that some are bitten just minding their own business. Probability being what it is, like a casino, if you play long enough you will eventually get bit!

Do not want. It is a big reason I live where I live.

Yes, but I put that in because "all blanket statements are false".

Scaredy cat, LOL ;)

But to further your point...our long-time family physician once said, paraphrased, "Percentages like 'there is only a .001% chance of some bad thing' is meaningless if you unfortunately happen to be part of that .001%."

Everybody has rolled a Yahtzee! At least once. I don't want my turn to be the unseen rattler. I want it to be Elizabeth Hurley's limo breaking down in front of my house while Mrs P is in a forgiving mood.
