Marine fishing

I'm thinking about going out to do some fishing out in newport or depoe bay but with this nasty storm we are having I'm not so sure. If I did go I would go Monday or Tuesday. If the weather gets better like is looks like right now, would that be alright or am I making a "newb" mistake? Does flooding from the rivers make marine fishing more or less productive? (Or more dangerous?) How long if I need to wait... should I wait (if the better weather holds up) before I go out there and try my luck? I've never marine fished before but I have salmon and steelhead fished so I'm not a complete newb. I've got everything I need and I'm set up. I heard lingcods are going crazy right now.

I would check out weather for the coastal area before heading out. Last i heard they were having 25 foot waves...which is pretty damn high. I can't tell ya not to go...but all ill say is be careful out there. Good luck.

Lings will be coming in through the first couple months of the year for spawning. so it will be crazy for a while. As for river flooding you may see increased turbidity in the bays and also an addition of more fresh water. How this affects marine fish I dont know. I know the crab run like hell for the ocean tho. I would suggest waiting for better weather and ocean conditions. Just keep your eye out and get out when its reasonable.

And salmon slayer its ok to tell me I shouldn't go or it would be really stupid... I like a little bit crazy wind and rain don't bother me too much but I'm new to how oceans behave and when to fish them and when not to so its ok.... any more advice (I soak it up like a sponge :)

I'd agree. We had to wait a few hours for a tide change to cross the Columbia bar in my Grandpa's 54' sailboat. The waves were running a tad over 20' that day and it was quite a ride. I saw guys out in small powerboats fishing. Hats off to those guys but I didn't want to be on anything smaller.

Thanks yomper and hookbait.... I'm actually going to fish from the shore either from a jetty or a cliff. I just put 30lb test line on my reel in case I need to haul one up a ways. Besides the jetty in newport or there any other place to go around there? What about depoe bay? A guy suggested to me to hop a fence near boiler bay and fish from the cliffs. It sounded illegal to me because there are signs that say don't go over the fence. But hey what do I know? Is depor bay a good place also?
