Spring Chinook Fishing Mckenzie River

Hey all,

I live in the Eugene area and have recently gotten super into Steelhead and Salmon fishing. Unfortunately I struck out with the steelhead on the Siuslaw this season, but I'm really looking forward to the upcoming Spring Chinook season I've heard so much about. I am relatively new to the area so I'm not really sure where the best spots are to target these fish, but I don't have a boat and will most likely be bank fishing.

I've heard positive things about the upper Mckenzie River for salmon, although I've struggled finding much info about it online. If anyone has any suggestions, holes, or gear recommendations it'd be much appreciated! Also, if there's better spots within 1ish hours of Eugene I am totally open to that too. Have had an absolute blast with the trout on the Mckenzie but I'm getting the itch for a fight (and some food)!

Again, if anyone has any recommendations pertaining to anything Spring salmon fishing it would mean a lot!

Thank you :)

On another note, does anyone have any good recommendations for April fishing near Eugene? Seems like the winter steelhead season will be over (closed on the Siuslaw March 31st), Salmon aren't in the area yet, and trout fishing is still closed. Not much of a bass fisherman honestly either. I'm willing to drive relatively far if it means good fishing! Thanks!

Fishing for Spring Chinook salmon on the McKenzie River is an exciting and rewarding experience. Here’s a guide to help you plan and succeed:

Key Information

  • Season: Spring Chinook typically run from April to June, with peak fishing often in May.
  • Regulations: Check the ODFW regulations for daily bag limits, open areas, and gear restrictions. Wild Chinook often have specific rules (e.g., catch-and-release).

Best Fishing Areas

  1. Leaburg Dam: A popular spot for Chinook angling.
  2. Hayden Bridge to Armitage Park: Known for productive fishing stretches.
  3. Dexter Reservoir to the Mouth: Offers accessible spots for bank or boat anglers.

Techniques and Gear

1. Trolling (for boat anglers):

  • Setup: Use a diver or lead weights with herring, anchovies, or wobbling plugs like Kwikfish (K14-K16).
  • Pro Tip: Apply scent (e.g., anise or garlic) to attract Chinook.

2. Drift Fishing (for bank anglers):

  • Use egg clusters, shrimp, or cured roe with a drift rig.
  • Focus on seams, tailouts, and deep pools where fish rest.

3. Plunking:

  • Ideal for slower water. Use Spin-N-Glo paired with bait (e.g., salmon eggs or shrimp).

4. Float Fishing:

  • Use bobbers with jigs or bait (roe or shrimp). Adjust depth to keep the bait in the strike zone.

Best Times

  • Early Morning: Chinook are more active in low light.
  • After Rain: Rising or stable water levels can trigger fish movement.

Tips for Success

  1. Scout Locations: Chinook prefer deeper, cooler waters, often near structure or shade.
  2. Use Fresh Bait: Keep bait fresh and lively for the best chance at success.
  3. Be Patient: Chinook can be finicky; persistence is key.
  4. Check Water Conditions: Ideal flows are clear to slightly stained water.

Safety Reminder

  • The McKenzie River can have swift currents. Wear a life jacket, especially if boating.
Good luck chasing those prized Spring Chinook!

I will be chasing the springers close to Springfield soon. Also some summer steelhead soon too. Message me if you would like.

I need to be honest with you. Springer fishing in that part of the valley is not very good. All the action is near Portland. Sandy , Clackamas , Columbia . Much brighter fish.

@Admin where did you find those details my friend?

P.S. The McKenzie's water is also ICE COLD. Literally. IMO the only way to survive, if one falls in, is to wear a PFD/life jacket!
