    Looking for electric motor advice

A 70lb 24v pushes my 12' drift boat around very well - only ran out of juice once, fighting a big tide :) 2 AGM's add 100lb, but like the range. Michael

    Chinook on flies

That's cool, I have been tempted to try that too, have brought flies along... I would try a couple classics: Michael

Fishermen aren't know for picture taking skills

Nice fish - I want to get up to the Alsea sometime, but have been doing ok on the slaw... I think hero shots are tough to get a good picture, too much excitement :) Michael

Helpful rule change being considered by ODFW

No, its not a plus - the reason to ban bait also applies to soft plastics - higher mortality, much higher, for fish caught and released. I am against the rule change, as are most folks concerned with preserving and enhancing our native fish populations.

Access to the jetties and wing dams at Florence on Siuslaw

We were crabbing there yesterday - forgot how windy it can be at the coast when it's hot in the valley. Pretty rough in the bay (2-3' swells, whitecaps - a little much in a small boat). The crab are in there, but we only managed two keepers due to difficult conditions).

Waiting for summer runs on the McKenzie: This is a purple variation of Syd Glasso's Orange Heron, directions for tying them can be found in John Shewey's books "Steelhead Flies" and in "Spey Flies and Dee Flies".

Better get out Sunday or Monday!

First couple fish: Went out Saturday from Newport on the Misty - Beautiful weather, and my two friends and I got a limit of sea bass and a couple lings. This is the easy way, for a buck a piece they filet them (and more importantly, deal with the mess). We each got 3 1/2 crab apiece, with...

    Octos in March ?

Hi Arlen, nice to see you here - and thank you for that tidbit of entomological curiosity. For those who don't know Arlen, his book "Bugwater" is priceless for those seeking to deceive NW trout. Michael

Underlining Royal Wulff Ambush on a 5wt

JHawk - good thinking on the rod loading. The Rio grand line you have is a half line weight heavier than a normal 5 wt (hence the 5-6 designation), and should work fine for normal fly casting. The Ambush line is a perfect line to learn to haul (and double haul) - which is how most guys use it -...

Me too. Here is the classic steelhead fly, a green butted skunk. A few material substitutions, the butt is chartreuse antron chenille over a flat silver tinsel tag, the body black ostrich herl, six or seven strands twisted on a small silver metallic tinsel, with a silver twist rib. Hackle is...

Underlining Royal Wulff Ambush on a 5wt

Sounds just right for single hand spey casting - with that line you shouldn't need much false casting, what is your intended use? When in doubt, I consult my friendly local flyshop :) Michael

And there is Spirit River 'Pseudo-Seal' - here is a fly tied with it. The pattern is Harry Lemire's Golden Edge Orange. Homewaters in Eugene carries Pseudo-Seal.
