Got a fishing boat but no hitch, who wants to go fishing?

I just got a fishing boat for my birthday, first boat I've ever had. It's a 12' 1964 Lund. It's on a trailer and everything, with a 2" ball, but I don't have a hitch until the one I'm ordering from U-Haul today gets here. If anyone wants to make a trip up to Lava Lake maybe or somewhere else (was just at Lava yesterday, 5 nice rainbows in 2 hours), I could help with gas and driving, and have all of my own tackle.

The boat's just got a little 80 thrust trolling motor but I was having good luck trolling with a wedding ring.

Update: I got a hitch today from U-Haul, drove over to Eugene to get it but it was better than waiting the 5-7 days and not taking my boat out! :)

Now I'm going to try and install it on my Ford Escort tomorrow, hopefully that will go smoothly.

I am sure the installation will go on without a hitch.... Now for the real life story... Best of luck.

I really really hope you know what you are doing trying to tow anything with an Escort. Those are rated to tow a maximum of 1000 lbs with a 5 speed trans and not recommended to tow at all with the auto. that's based on the '97 model year, I'd imagine an older one would be less capable. PLEASE BE CAREFUL. You are going to have a hell of a time on Willamette Pass I'd imagine.

(Personally I'd never tow with anything FWD, but I don't own any FWD vehicles.)

Thanks Jim. My Escort is a 5 speed, but I ended up returning the hitch because the 2nd gen Escorts are not rated to tow anything, and there's only 1,000 lbs between the car weight and the GWVR. Weighed my boat and it was about 550 lbs with the batteries but no motor, so that would have been really pushing it with passengers included.

So, I ended up finding a $500 truck on Craigslist... runs pretty good just needed a new radiator and alternator, both of which I've taken care of. Almost finished with the new parking brake cable so I should be up there soon, hopefully at Wickiup tomorrow. I can't find much information online about the boat ramps there, how many are there and if there's more than one, which one is easiest? I plan on camping at one of the free sites on what I think is the west side of the lake, by the Deschutes arm.

Wickiup has nice ramps. I believe Gull Point is better.
