What weight for a bass rod?

I have a 8wt 10' and a 5wt 9'. The 8 wt would be a beast to cast in the nucanoe. I am concerned that the 5 wt would not have enough backbone to toss large flies or horse a fish out of the weeds. I am wondering about either a 6wt or 7wt rod that is 9'. I am thinking I could also use the 7wt for summer steelhead. Wondering what others thoughts are.

I would say get a 7wt. I have fished bass with a 9' 5wt and it was a blast but it was a little hard to get big poppers out there. The 6 wt isn't going to give you that much of a difference from a 5wt. With the 7wt, you could, like you said, chase summer steelies too. I say go with a 7wt. :D

I'm interested in the answers to this question to. Thanks for posting it.

I'm hoping that my 7' 6wt. will work well, for Long Tom smallies.

I caught a whopper on my 2 wt. Go with the 7 since you've already got a 5. I personally will use my 10' 6wt for large poppers.
