Since my wife and I retired from the adventures of ocean fishing, we have been chasing Kokanee on placid tree rimed lakes. Last Friday we ventured up to Timothy Lake, and for the first time on that piece of water we targeted Kokane. It will be the last time we go after Kokanee up there. Thy were the size of the herring we used for bait when fishing out of Astoria and Newport. Literally they were 5 to 7 inches. I brought a few home to see what the deal was. When I cleaned them, I found they were sexually mature as about half of them had egg roe in them. I think the Timothy Lake fish are stunted either from over population or lack of food. My bet is over population as they were beyond easy to hook up and there is a 25 fish limit.
Tuesday, we ventured north to Lake Merwin Wa. That was a different story, we brought home a boat load of very plump kokanee. The fish were plentiful and a lot of fun to land. Of course, we also lost quite a few as those land locked sockeyes have a way of spitting the hook. Had a couple for dinner tonight nice tasting fish.
The first two pictures are Timothy the last two are Merwin.
