Alsea pontoon float

Anyone want to join me to float the Alsea in a pontoon tomorrow? I've never done it before and it would be safer doing it with someone else. I'm thinking of doing Mill Creek to Salmonberry.

I would love to, but I just moved back from Washington and can't get tags for 6 months! Mill Creek to Salmonberry is a great run though, not difficult at all. You should have no problem finding someone to float with!

I would love to but the Alsea is a little to far south atm. Had the chance to float the wilson on my toon in Dec. was real nice. Most of the fishing was still done from the bank. just a lot easier to change locations.

Non Res. license and tags are the way to go then, or a one day? I think I'll get the Non Res. lic. this year.

Sucks to pay more but still worth it to get out on the water!

Darn, no takers. I'll check back in about an hour or so, but I'll be at Mill Creek at first light if anyone is interested.

Got my largest steelhead so far. Weighed in at just over 10lbs! I ended up hooking him while backtrolling a hotshot. I had a heck of a time trying to land him though. Sort of glad nobody was there to laugh at me. But it was a great fight!!

I've never backtrolled from a pontoon. I hear it's difficult (from OFFers, among others). But I've fished from them. Landing a big fish from a floating pontoon is about the funniest goat-rope you can see on the river, and yeah, everyone is laughing at you -- it's part of the game. The harder the battle, the better the story.

You'da'man, Lucky.

I had started out the morning just throwing my bobber out there. Then I decided to try back trolling. I wasn't at it for that long (maybe 5 minutes) but I wasn't sure it was working correctly. I was already about to give up because I wasn't confident I was doing it right when my rod started going nuts! I grabbed it out of the rod holder and fought it for maybe 30 seconds while drifting down the river. Figured I needed to somehow find my way to shore, so I stuck the rod between my legs and rowed toward shore. There was just a tiny spot in between some old blackberry bushes... let's just say I am lucky the fish was hooked REALLY well.

Cool story, sounds like a blast. Those are always the memorable ones.

I've pulled lots of plugs and flies from a drift boat, but haven't done all that well in a pontoon (Pac1000). So happy for you!
The Fish Gods were looking out for you.

Way to go a throbbing rod between your legs sounds like a porn movie

I'd love to get out this weekend. I have a 9 ft pontoon boat that seriously needs to get wet

If you cannot make it... Go to YouTube and search for "Pontoon Boats in Whitewater" it's amazing to see what others are doing; then again it will likely make you want to get out even more.

I did that and one of my videos comes up. In the video is my old 8ft Creek Company. White water is fun in pontoons but for me its a summer thing, when getting splashed is no big deal. Ill still float rivers when its cold out I just avoid waves/rapids if I can.

Nice Video!
Definitely agree with the "only in summer" thought.
Going to have to learn how to do video.

Way to go! Sounds like fun times. I used to float the mckenzie all the time in cheap rubber rafts, we'd side drift, or as close to it as you could at 15 in a cheap rubber raft, night crawlers and corkies...Was always fun, I have bought 2 dang pontoons boats as an adult and sold them both with never even hitting the water. lame.
