I don't care what they look like, it is their ability to breath Salt water.
Thank you for saving me the time to post the photo. A steelhead is a steelhead and they're all capable of entering and living in the ocean The specie of fish doesn't change just because it can't go to salt water...just say'n

They may be capable but they don't, so they aren't. Just say'n :)

Yeah I read all that before. Living in Bend I'm sure you've been all over Hosmer before. Therefore I can't wait to hear your alternate name for Atlantic salmon.

Did you give up, have to change the subject?

I thought we were talking about Steelhead (Oncorhynchus mykiss)?? Same scientific name as Rainbow Trout except one smoltifies while entering the Ocean only to return as a Steelhead.

Oh, we call them Landlocked Fish. :)

haha..no. I didn't give up. That would be admitting I'm wrong. Best debate I've had here in a long time.

Changing the subject is conceding to the debate at hand. This has been a great fact finding mission, but I would actually like to see the picture of that trout that you had mentioned. I do love me some fish porn! :)

Wait a second.....I didn't change the subject I just gave you another example of the same thing to further discredit your opinion.

I'll post two pictures. (now that you have doubt:D).... one taken a long time ago of fish my dad and a friend caught then the one of my sister (again, years ago) holding up the spawned out version of the same thing.

So if you read that all before, then you should know better.

And....this is a change of subject, talking about these landlocked salmon rather than Steelhead. Salmon and Steelhead are two different species. However, they both go to the Ocean and return, but only the steelhead has a very closely related relative that remains as the resident population and neither dies after spawning.

Steelhead is a species, it contains a genetic code... no matter where you hatch it or rear it or plant it, in any enviroment a steelhead of steelhead orgin is a steelhead, now.. that fish is within 1 generation going to begin an evolutionary change through each generation to the best suited creature for its new enviroment. If you take 20 kids from new york and transplant them in yelm they are going to be new yorkers even though they live in yelm now, however each time they mate the off-spring will become northwesterners, and each ensuing generation will become even purer northwesterners slowly losing their new york heritage... but their children will claim new yorker status as long as its cooler or more impressive than being a northwesterner... steelhead after 1 generation in a lake run enviroment are trout... no matter how much cooler it is to call them steelhead. A trout in a river that is over around 22'' is considered a steelhead becouse of how hard it is to stick a hook in a trouts face of that caliber... so, split hairs, moot point, a big ass trout is a big ass trout and lets let them share the cool name with us.... for their trout-

The kid analogy is a little weak. More like if we as humans had the ability to undergo physical changes in our lungs on the way to Mars every year to be able to breath the thin atmosphere. Then when the space program gets shut down due to budget cuts, evolution will kick in and over time we won't be able to breath on Mars anymore. But the bottom line is........We are still human!

How about this then.... the IGFA does not recognize ANY planted lake run steelhead as eligable in the steelhead catagory... and only 1 state in the mid-west has a state recognized record for "steelhead" the rest are registered under rainbow trout. For a "steelhead" to be a record in any world recognized record book... it must spend its life in the salt, a trout that lives in a lake, spawns in a river, and returns to a lake is a trout. They can call them steelhead if they want, and all kinds of sportsmens clubs can list steelhead records for those places... but world wide... biologist don't-

Watch it again, very similar argument! :) Ours was a bit more polite. :wall:

The real argument I have is with guys I've met in New Zealand who claim their trout are bigger than ours. I tell them they need to compare apples to apples that their fish are steelhead trout brought over from Northern California and cannot be compared to an average redside. Sometimes you hear or read about steelhead over there but for the most part it's a trout capitol. So if Flybum had been a Kiwi telling me he enjoyed catching bigger trout in his country than we do here in the Northwest this thread would have the same dialogue.

Well that's just it, THEY'RE F-ING TROUT! They didn't go to the Ocean so their damn trout. They are correct calling them trout!!!!!!! They have a healthier stream system and most likely a good biomass to support their TROUT becoming so large. Maybe if we didn't screw up our systems we would be boasting more large tout too. Over on the Metolius I have personally seen these TROUT that are as large as Steelhead, but they're still damn trout. I've caught fish migrating up from Wickiup that have similar characteristics but their still damn trout, they have no access to the Ocean.

Where's those pics you were talking about, Just say'n :)

Hey man don't loose your cool. Up until now we were having a good time with this. I already agreed that the steelhead in NZ had 'become trout' . You hate to be wrong don't you.
