Picked up some salmon eggs from the fridge at the store , figured they were good to go , but they were all slimy and gooey and wouldnt stay on the hook ... so i figuered they must not be cured yet .
Went out fishing on monday and stopped by the lil drive through bait shop in troutdale and asked for Cured eggs , they give me what looks like the same thing but it also says egg clusters .... and i ask "so these are fully cured and are firm enough ot stay on the hook ?" and theyr like "ya.... duh" BUt no , same thing , and werent in clusters , but a big gooey pile . Get all smashed and only good for one cast .
Can i just use those and do the borax thing and let them dry more ? I dont have any new fresh eggs to cure myself or i would .
THey are suppsed to be a little firmer when cured arent they ?
I have noticed through practice with the eggs that the way you fish them and cst them can make a huge difference. Do you use an "egg loop" on your hook? If you get the loop around the sceen of the egg cluster and you manage your drift appropriately, the eggs will hang on a bit longer. Also when retrieving avoid the YANK, " there aren't any damn fish in here!" retrieve than maybe your hook will return with some red gooey still attached.
Yes salt does toughen them up some.
Yes some gelatin is made from animals! The more death involved the better the bait!
Everybody get one with eggs, and cures...Here's a "one" for you guys...Knox gelatin. It will tuffen 'em up a bit. Look into the ingredients on Knox. Do a little research, and figure out which chemical makes jello stiff, but soft at the same time. Your eggs will change overnight. single cast baits, to 10 cast baits, with a single chem change. And don't let your fresh eggs get wet, AT ALL, they are way fishier when removed, and immediately contained. Ah, thats two, but hey, I guess everyone gets two! Knox 'em up if they are too sloppy, and don't let your fish babies touch water when they are fresh.
Clear or red thread used to tie bait on kwikfish.I had the same question....looks like I will be putting my spawn sac mesh to use. Anybody know what the best way to ty your spawn sacs?
 Two thumbs up from me ,I may be new to the post but I'm OLD.
