AS I understand it, shad are supposedly running at this time of year.
Anyone care to share info?
I'm thinking of going this coming week.
Maybe in the area of Yellow creek?
Any better easy access that you care to recommend, I'd really like the help.

It has been 20 years since I fished the Umpqua for shad and I did it from a drift boat. I can't remember where we put in or where we got out, sorry. If I were to do it I would find a riffle and fish the tail out. We picked up fish while shooting the rapids by throwing to the edge , they tend to hang in the calm water. Good luck and let us know how you do or discover.

  1. Sawyer Rapids (Near Reedsport)
    • Access: Located just under 27 miles east of Reedsport, Sawyer Rapids is the closest Umpqua River shad spot to the Oregon coast.
    • Why It's Great: As the river drops, shad congregate at the bottom of the rapids, forming a natural bottleneck where large numbers of shad wait to migrate upriver.
    • Fishing Tip: Anglers often report half-day catches of 40+ shad, especially when the river is running low, slowing the shad's passage through the rapids.

🧰 Gear & Techniques

Shad are known for their vigorous fight, making them a favorite among anglers. Using light tackle enhances the experience.

  • Rod: 4 to 5-weight fly rod or ultra-light spinning rod.
  • Line: Sinking lines (Type 3 or 4) are effective for getting lures into the strike zone.
  • Lures: Small, brightly colored jigs, spinners, and spoons work well. Shiny or fluorescent colors like chartreuse and pink are particularly effective.
  • Technique: Cast upstream and retrieve with a steady motion to mimic the movement of prey.
Anglers often report that a 3-pound shad fights like a 6-pound steelhead, offering a thrilling experience.
