Phew! You could have really messed with me there by not answering the mystery...me forever plagued with anxiety, never knowing the true rationale and me wondering, "Am I an idiot? Just too clueless to not know the obvious?"

Now I can rest easy, and also now know the nefarious nature of turtleshell frames. Thank you so much!

As somebody that worked in the optical industry for number of years polarized lenes are the only way to go in sunglasses. If you have a choice of color in polarized lenses and you are not super light sensitive go brown. The yellow in the brow will increase contrast and will help you see fish. They are also great to wear on a rainy day while driving. Again it increases contrast and cuts glare which when there is a lot of road spray is a lot easier on the eyes.

Probably not all lies. Some rivers I only catch on Orange. Other I've catch with Pink. and then there's black and purple rivers. The most important thing about Steelhead fishing, this is going to sound dumb, fish when there's fish in the river. Hit the river when it's peak season. while you can catch when it's not peak, it's just way harder. Also figure out what works for you and zone into it. Make it your way to catch them. When I started, my preferred way was spoons and in some rivers I still prefer it.

Grab a couple buddies, jump n the truck and head to the river. Crack a beer, talk some $hit and laugh a little a lot. Take a second to take in the surroundings and be thankful you are not working. If you find fish it's a awesome day...if you don't well...it's an awesome day.

This is very true, in my experiences too. Green was the color, on a trip in the 80's. When we ran out of green, we switched to chartreuse (closest thing to green, that we had). The bite came to a standstill for us, and about 2 dozen others. Until a kid came from town, with more green bait! Green & Black is deadly in the South Santiam, and in Foster Reservoir as well.

I have went over 2 weeks of being skunked before finally hooking one. Like all have said, presentation is key, and being where the fish are. I have fished where i can see the fish but they have no interest in biting the jig or bead right in front of them, and i have hooked fish that swam quite a ways just to bite. I have quite a bit to learn but i enjoy the time on the water more than anything else. If you are not having any luck, just enjoy nature.

No easy win chasing winter steel.. never has been, don't think it ever will be. Having a few good days with em will keep you chasing tho!
Enjoy that chase... best part of it - that and getting hit on a swung fly! Swung fly getting slammed by a winter steelhead tho...

One thing you need to understand is this:

Guys who have been fishing here for a long time aren't going to tell you much other than the basics.

If someone gives you more info, chances are they are lying to you.

The good spots, the specific gear they are using, that's all stuff good fisherman generally don't talk about.

There's no socialism or brotherhood to fishing, it's not like we are all in this together everyone should catch a fish.

However, forums like this are great for people looking out, but most of the time it's still just general information...where's "hot" what they caught, what they might have used. But the real fisheries, and good holes, man....that's not gonna come handed to you. And I don't hate to say it, it's part of the gig. Going out and getting skunked, using different patterns, getting frustrated, that's part of the game. When you do find that hole and that right presentation to use you will understand what I mean when I say this.

Chances are you were lied to. It's not that big of a deal. (Good) fisherman lie all the time. Go out and get frustrated, figure it out. That's part of the fun.

I disagree, I think there is a brotherhood to fishing. Nothing makes me happier while fishing than to see my buddies getting fish (as well as me) and I will be glad to share my knowledge with the right person.

I've definitely learned a lot from people on this forum both in posts and PM's. I don't think there is anything wrong with sharing methods but no need to give up locations publicly. I love exploring but also have "go-to" locations. I cringed when I saw the name of this creek I fish in the title of a post on ifish lately. Uggh!

I agree Eric, and C_Run makes some good points. I'll share what, where and when with people I have fished with. Quite a few from OFF. I don't get as specific with information for everyone else, but will definitely help out. I've got a friend who is new to Salmon/Steelhead fishing and it was a thrill seeing him get his 1st Salmon trolling and float fishing.
