Access to the jetties and wing dams at Florence on Siuslaw

So I have checked the maps for florence , especially the sattelite maps and can see South Jetty County Park . Am not sure if there is closer parking to the jetty beyond that ? Also note near the park what appears to be a pier hopefully open to the public for crabbin ??? Las but not least there appear to be a series of wing dams ( small jettys ) on the South bank of the river headed inland from the park. Does anyone know if these are accessable to the public to fish from ??? This place really peaks my interest and I hear the fishin there can be pretty good as well. Thanks for lookin and good fishin to you all !!!

the wing damns are a line of big wood posts, the last one is taller and most of these have red channel markers on them. you cannot go out on the wing damns.

the south jetty pier (rock dock) is used for crabbing and recent reports from it have been very good. people also crab from the docks/marina at Florence but with many less keepers making it that far up river.

Cheers, roger

We were crabbing there yesterday - forgot how windy it can be at the coast when it's hot in the valley. Pretty rough in the bay (2-3' swells, whitecaps - a little much in a small boat). The crab are in there, but we only managed two keepers due to difficult conditions).

There are also a line of 4 or 5 smaller rip-rap breakwaters (wing dams) that you could walk out on & fish or throw a crab snare off of but they are a difficult walk to get to through the heavy brush.

Thanks flocaster ! That is what I was looking for . Should be able to get out there then and pretty much be on my own . Will be like a total outdoor adventure. Was pretty sure by looking at the satellite pics there was more to those wing dams other than just large poles. I will be trying this the end of this month and post my results when I return. Good fishin and crabbin to you all !

No problem. Now you've got me thinking about trying it. Good luck, maybe I'll see you out there.

Do people get any salmon down there from the rocks like at winchester bay or waldport?

They do occasionally. You just don't see many caught that way here because there are only a handful of people who target them with that method. I've been planning on trying it myself here in a few weeks. So I say give it try & if I doesn't work, you're only a half hour away from winchester bay.

THERE are a few finger jetties down from the 'Rock Dock'-the crabbing dock at south jetty park, they are not worth fishing from. Also I would not crab anywhere except from the dock itself, because I have seen many a ring/trap lost from someone throwing one off a jetty and getting it snagged on a rock.

I live in Florence and have never, ever, caught anything fishing in that area. You would be better to fish off the actual jetty (you can drive near the end of it on the S side, and there is an actual parking area near the one on the N side). Better yet drive down to Winchester Bay and fish there, the fishing is much better and right now there is quite a few salmon in the bay as well.

I had heard somewhere that they had caught fish off of Rhododenderon Dr. somewhere. I usually do go down a little further but I was thinking a morning that I was strapped for time it might be an option, sounds like it's not. lol

They do, but not very many people take the time to fish for them there. It's the section of rhody in front of the dump & the humane society

that stretch along Rhody Dr. gets very popular later in the season and last year we watched several nice Coho caught there in late September. the water is deep (20ft) just off shore and the fish seem to pass by in easy range of casting....cheers, roger

oh yes, I might have heard that this year they will be concentrated on the other side of the river, staying well clear of the rocky stretch along Rhody Dr.... LOL

Girls and they would love to catch some fish even some sculpin its all fun for them.. any hints gear rigs bait color I'm new to ocean fishing and would love your imput. Not much in the way of fish to be caught from the rock dock...mostly little sculpin (2-6 inches) & the occasional greenling. As far as gear & rigs I would use medium action gear with 10 or 12lb test line. For terminal tackle tie 1/2 - 2ozs of weight to the end of your mainline. About 18 inches up from the weight tie a loop. To that loop attach a #2 snelled leader & bait it with sandshrimp, clam neck or your bait of choice. For crab bait chicken or turkey is always a good bet but they've been selling tuna straight off the boat down at the port & if you can get your hands on em, tuna heads or backs work pretty well. If you want to clam, the flats where the north fork siuslaw enters the main river, just east of the casino, is one of the best places around to dig softshell clams. Hope that helps. Feel free to pm me if you have any more questions

There has been several salmon caught down near the jaws lately, I would try a big pink or chart. spinner off the jetty, either north or south sides. Or along Rhododendron as previously mentioned in this post.
