Fishing the Molalla - Pudding Rivers for Bass

Oh rats ---- I'll have to devise some other plan for this week. I thank you all for saving me a trip to the briars.

Fishing the Molalla - Pudding Rivers for Bass

I've got some buds at work who are going out Friday to an area on the lower Molalla for bass at a known bassy spot. I would join them but I currently have no rack on my truck for our canoe, and they are floating down the river aways to reach this bassy spot. But now I have bass on the brain...

    Need some advice

Lots of good advice in the thread - keep it simple with a 5wt or 6wt rod 9ft long- but I do recommend a fast action or sometimes called a tip action rod. Much easier to cast as a beginner - Go with a floating weight forward line - a decent reel -- this is for trout so you don't need dual disk...

    5wt Spey vs. 8wt multi-tip?

I was in no way disparaging the OPs question - getting into fly fishing in 1989 was confusing enough. My gawd --- lines - leaders - tippets - backing - fast action - medium action .... and then there was talk of this thing called "nymphing" ... best only talked about in low murmers in the back...

Home made fly's vs manufactured fly's

As long as the fly is decently tied doesn't really matter - unless maybe you are fishing a river like the Henrys Fork or Metolius where the trout are very picky. To get started in fly tying you are going to spend around $200 or measured in store bought trout flies at $1.75 each --- about 114...

    5wt Spey vs. 8wt multi-tip?

Thinking the same thing - but modern marketing and the need to keep selling stuff means new products. Switch rod - multi-tip - shark skin tip - medium fast super duper semi-sinking line ... oh my. Progress is good and all but at a few points during my day all I'm looking for is a pole and line...

    Farmers' Almanac fishing calendar

My GPS also can tell me when to fish - but I've never seen it catch a fish. So frankly I don't trust it.

Do you have a "special place"

As in where you will end up after meeting your eventual demise ? In my current Will - last wishes document my ashes are to be sprinkled in the Deschutes in several places between Mecca and Trout Creek. Specifically in some of those nice weedy beds full of nymphs. Hopefully my crispy remains...

    Deschutes on Thursday

Mecca is a great place with a lot of access - some great nymphing water. Upstream from the parking area is where I caught my 20 inch redside. A number 8 black stone (weighted) and a number 10 or 12 beadhead Prince nymph tied about 1ft behind the stone (I just tie Prince to the bend of the...

    Need rod advice.

Troutmasta - lots of good advice in the thread and bottom line is you will need 2 rigs to cover trout and large fish like salmon (just like in spin fishing). An 8wt outfit will handle any steelhead and the occasional salmon - and what you are looking for is a 9ft rod with what is called "fast...

    Targus?

Sorry to hear about the demise of your rod. You might try looking at Wholesale Sports at 82nd and Johnson on the East side. I picked up a decent Okuma 4 piece fly rod for $65.

    WalMart antifishing contributions

Kind of mixed on all of this - proper conservation can result in improved habitat and better fishing / hunting etc. I really doubt the extreme animal rights folks (and I mean extreme) will ever get their agenda approved. I do think you need to support groups as you can ( Trout Unlimited etc.)...

Nehalem Bay jetty - inlet beach areas

Has anyone had any experience fishing these areas for rockfish - perch - or the other usual suspects ? From Google Earth it looks like a possible area for saltwater fishing.

    Protecting gear from saltwater

I'm just getting going on flinging flies off the jetty and in the surf. I don't have a saltwater reel - but then its only a low end Okuma aluminum reel. As I recall the biggest thing you can do is immediately rinse your gear (rod-reel-line-flies) with clean fresh water which should remove/dilute...

Questions on quality/durability of fly lines

For average day in day out fishing I've always had good luck with Cortland 333 or 444. I refuse to spend more than $40-$50 on a fly line. Keep it simple.
