Trout are definitely my first choice but I have no pride- I can fish with corn in a slough and catch carp one right after another- as long as they're bitin', I'm fishin'. Brings back kid fishing memories.
From a fly dragging viewpoint (split shot and a fly on spinning rod), this one:
The top pic is as new- the bottom two are after too many fish teeth. (still catching fish though!)
NOT that tricky really at all. I told you the exact spot, the exact lure and depth, and the exact time. I was simply fishing like that for trout the first time I caught one- I kept doing it and kept catching them.
You can't go out there for an hour and expect to light them up- you might...
The salmon in there are not a rumour or mistaken identity. This is what you can catch. Pretty sure this is not a sucker! Caught on 6ft. ultralight rod w/6lb. test. 34" long- 10-12 lbs. I guessed?
It's been a few years since I was down there- this was 6/28/03. This was a super hot 90+ degree...
Most all lakes within an hour or so of town are put and take fisheries-ODFW puts them in and we take them out. Then they're gone until the next stocking. (i.e. read the stocking reports and go fishing SOON after they are put in) You're in the big city now-NOT in Rogue River fish heaven!

just putting my .02 in here.
Adding a fly to your flasher set-up will absolutely catch fish! A small dodger and a fly is also deadly and less drag on your pole.
And natural presentation or not- I routinely troll flies at 2-3 mph straight through the water and fish just SLAM'EM! It does help...
You'll also need to go deeper for trout when the surface temp gets to the 60-65 degree range. Trolling near the surface will get very few fish in that warm of water. Just getting down 10-15ft can make ALL the difference in your catching or not catching. That can be done easily with just weights...
haha!
I use the same gear for kokanee- ultralight rods, no snubber,no lake trolls. With light gear and a smooth drag- kokes are as easy to catch as trout. Well, except that they are twice as crazy in the water and they can get away more easily. Just say'n- no lip ripping occurs.

Terminology is correct.
No harm using a big pole for little fish- you're right though -not much feedback from litttle fish. IF you use those long lake troll thingys- you'll need that big rod just to carry all that weight and drag from the blades.
You setup is not "oversized for trolling" as...
I've caught a couple over 20", but like most- only on accident while trout trolling. I've heard it said that you should fish for salmon in lakes just like you do anywhere else. A dodger and a herring sounds normal to me. That and time in the water.
Jim
That really sucks. 3 or 4 years ago they would let you park in the lot all night to camp out on the lake. I did get a warning last year for doing that anyway. I used the ramp in the park across the lake one June day last year- had to wait in line about 40 minutes to get outa there-...
