Tuna fishing and work

Good grief I finally made it out to the tuna grounds. It was my first tuna trip and I found out it was a lot of fun but my god it was a lot of work too. We went out 25 mile and started out trolling with six rod. After we caught a fish trolling we would stop and fish with live bait. Fun but work.

We went with my buddy on his boat the "Bad Duck" it's a 26' Duckworth Offshore like mine. He is the tuna guy and it was my wife's and my first tuna trip. Trolling fast with six rods out was all new to me. We crossed the bar at 7am and headed SW about 25 miles. We had loaded up with ice the night before, tuna take a lot of ice, without the ice to keep them cool they turn to mush. We had stopped in Ilwaco to pick up live bait $25 bucks a scooped, tuna fishing is not cheap. We ended up with 11 fish, lost a few and had to deal with a bunch of sharks. Truthfully at my age I prefer salmon fish. I think tuna fishing is fun but when you get on a bait stop and they are all over it's a quick move fast fight. I think next year I'll limit myself to two trips. I'm at that slow down and smell the roses place in my life. Didn't take time to get any picture but my wife has a couple on her phone. I will say the ocean was beautiful yesterday, whales, dolphins, and other great to see.

Awesome. Tuna fishing is by far my favorite but you are right, it's a lot of work. I am glad you are experiencing it.

If you like it, I have a nice rig I'd sell you. Shimano 2 speed TLD30 and a Calstar 5'6'' all roller rod. would easily handle fish over 100 lbs. $400. I'll just never be able to fish tuna again. If you're interested, send me a PM. I ain't giving it away at that but I'll toss in plenty of extras to make it a great deal.

Yeah, I hear that.
Going through my gear last night I separated out 10 other reels, mostly Penn, that I will probably never use again.
Gonna have to either sell them or swap them for Steelhead/Salmon freshwater reels.
Still haven't gone through my rods yet.
I used to own a 24' Wellcraft that I fished out of L.A./O.C. area. I always had extra gear for friends that wanted to go fishing but didn't have salt water gear. Now, I have the gear but no boat, other than my little jon boat.

I have a ton of Penn reels, the old ones 109, 209, 309, longbeach models and so on. I mostly just put them on a shelf to look at. I have a couple of Penn senators that I need to clean up and use. My kids are going to have fun getting rid of all my fishing gear when I kick the bucket. I bet you miss the Wellcraft and those ocean fishing trips.

Yeah, I miss the trips and being able to go when I wanted and fish where I wanted without having to try and book a place on a party boat.
But I'm glad I no longer have the expense of it. That was fine when I was working. Being a master plumber, a days work easily paid for a day on the water.
I got a couple of them old Penn reels, Monofil #25, Long Beach #65, and Long Beach #259.
Also got a couple of 500s, a 140, a 146, a 545 and 113H Senator with a Tiburon frame. Those are the Penns I'm gonna get rid of.
I have a couple other Penns I'm gonna keep and some Diawa Sealines for future use. I figure they will cover me for salmon trolling as well as if I get out for Rockfish or Halibut.
I still have a bunch of Fresh water stuff I'll hang onto but it's mostly light stuff for panfish and bass as well as some Catfish rigs.
It just seems to collect on me. Maybe I should make a habit of avoiding the toy stores. I been here 6 months plus and still haven't been in the Cabela's store just a couple miles away. I been afraid to go there.

It's a good move to hang onto the Diawa Sealines. You will find a good use for them up here. I try not to even to look at the Cabelas catalog let alone go to one of their stores!

All that gear sounds great,,:thumb: But, Irish slow down and smell the roses. with a boat like that I'd be smell'n daisy's Glad to here you all at a good time it is hard work though,,next year I want learn to jig tuna down deep....FISH-ON!!!!!
