So I was out bottom fishing today and when we started Lingcod fishing after getting our limit of Rockfish I immediately hooked into an extremely large fish of some sort. I thought I had the bottom at first until it started taking line slowly and consistently. On multiple occasions I was able to put my whole 180lbs of body weight into it and lift it maybe 10 feet off the bottom only for it to go straight back down. Although my friends have caught halibut in that area before I doubt it was a halibut due to the nature of its fight. It literally felt like I was trying to reel in someone’s bedroom door. After fighting it for about 10 minutes it finally broke my 65lb braid and was gone. I have been thinking possibly a large skate but I didn’t think they really liked being around rocks and preferred sandy bottoms.
