"Coffenbury Lake, Vernonia Pond, Lost Lake, and Sunset Lake are stocked with surplus hatchery winter steelhead. Catching a steelhead in still water can be a fun and unique experience when the conditions on the rivers aren't good."

Yeah. I notice all those lakes are in the same northwest region of Oregon.
Those of us who fish further outside he Portland area are pretty much left out.

I was kind of thinking along those same lines. Like why not dump some into other lakes too--outside of the NW zone (or farther south in the NW zone, like Big Creek or Olalla)? Or maybe Foster, Dexter, Hills Creek, etc. here in the Willy Valley.

Seems like They used to dump em in some coastal lakes! Meares, Lorens and Towne lakes come to mind🤔 Probably depends on the fish available.

They do this around North Bend when there is a surplus in Tenmile Creek. My understanding is that the local STEP program has limited lakes that they have received permission to stock the surplus fish.

I forgot to mention that Olalla has been stocked, with surplus steel, in the past. And it went unannounced. But I watched an old codger (85 he said) catch a 10 pounder, back in the day.

Just a heads up, you will not be getting to Lost Lake from the coast using Foss Rd. Huge mudslide about 3 miles after road turns to gravel. Wishing I was fishing

Those are extra fish from the North Fork hatchery. Limited manpower and travel with live fish makes going too far a problem

Had no doubt about that. My questions is that why aren't surplus steel, at OTHER hatcheries, not planted in other areas?

Not sure all have surplus fish to plant. I know they recycle some fish at the bottom of the river to give them a second chance at getting caught.
