The girlfriend and I went on a little hike up to Soapstone lake on the coast last week during the sunshine and it was absolutley amazing. I was hesitant to post anything at first but in the time we were there we saw 3 other groups of hikers so I figured the cat's already out of the bag. It's a very easy 1 1/4 mile hike round trip. The trail is extremly easy to walk along and well marked with a neat crossing at soapstone creek. The trail took us around the lake and across the inflow creek where we surprised a pair of mallards and watched the trout fry dart around in shallow water. Eventually we made it to the outflow creek where there's a very nice bench to sit on and eat lunch. After lunch I decided to give fishing a try while the girlfriend was preoccupied with the 10 million newts and feeding the birds crumbs from her sandwhich. I knew there were fish becuase of the trout fry we saw in the creek but I didn't have high hopes. Literally 3 casts in I realized that this place is special. About 45 minutes of fishing provided 8 or so large cutthroat trout. We each landed one over 15 inches long with most being 12-13 inches. I can't say that I know of many other places where you can catch wild cutthroats of that size with such ease. After careful handling we released all of our fish. Unfortunately without any great pictures. The only garbage we found was a bobber washed up against the log we were standing so if you do decide to visit be sure to pack out your garabage and be gentle with those special fish so we can keep this place nice and clean. It would be a great place to take the kids for the day and I hope if anyone does decide to visit that you enjoy yourselves as much as we did.
