Has anyone heard of the smelt coming in?
I don’t think they come into Newport anymore. I live close to Newport and I’ve never seen any smelt there. I think you’re probably thinking of the herring. In February the Yaquina river in Newport still gets a decent herring run.O.mykiss, Thanks for the comeback. They still come to Newport Oregon [ I think } but when i'm not sure. Looks like the fisheries need to put a stop to the over fishing maybe.

Guys started crushing herring in Yaquina bay last week.Herring should start about mid-March or earlier in Newport. Bring your bucket and micro shrimp rigs (3 hooks per rig) about 1/2 dozen or so. Tony

Why 3 hooks? You can use as many as you want for herring.
