Siltcoos rules are clear...

the posts on fishing violations on Siltcoos have been good but disturbing since it sounds like we may have some illegal catch going on.

I wanted to make sure I understood the daily rules correctly, so I found the critical words in the regs that makes things crystal clear:

NW Zone, Regulations for this zone, page26: 3. Anglers may not continue to angle for jack salmon or trout after retaining a limit of adult salmon or steelhead.

---keep a Jack Coho: you can keep fishing.
---keep a rainbow or 'cutt' over 20": you can keep fishing.
---hell, you can keep a Jack Coho and 5 trout with one over 20" AND you can keep fishing.

but CATCH AND TAG AN ADULT COHO: YOU ARE DONE FOR FISHING FOR THE DAY! WHICH MEANS YOU DO NOT PUT A LINE IN THE WATER UNTIL 1 HOUR BEFORE SUNRISE THE FOLLOWING DAY!

Well done Roger.

Sounds like time to switch from salmon/trout to perch, bass, or catfish mode unless you really want to go home early then...

for me at least, catching and tagging an adult Coho makes it a full rich day, especially at Silcoos, and for my wife and I, we could keep fishing Siltcoos with 1 line to potentially get a Jack, Cutt, big Bow, or another adult for our second tag....

but even then, if catching 2 coho at Siltcoos wasn't enough for the day, on the way home to Florence, we could drop the boat in the Siuslaw and keep fishing for Jacks and adult Chinooks, since there would still be room on each of our tags that day for 1 adult 'Nook.

let's hope the Coho populations keep improving and our river seasons are extended, they are fantastic fish to catch and eat...

here is one that bugs me. one jack a day. so if i get one jack and fish for my adult what do you do if you get another jack?

If you don't know, let it go. I was stupid this week and didn't read the regs on the Elk. So when we netted a wild fish I sat there stupified because I didn't know if it was legal to keep it or not. Fortunately, as I was about to let the thing go, some guys that were just upstream watching us told us we could keep one wild fish. I would have let the thing go if it wasn't for them. It's careless to go out on the water without knowing the rules and I won't do that again but it's plain irresponsible to keep fish you knowingly or unknowingly are not supposed to. Thanks for the thread and the comments, hopefully this hits home with the people that need to hear it. I suspect tho that we're just preaching to the choir.

my 'ho ho ho' holiday wish is that for 2012, the DFG adjust the Coho daily rules to 1 adult and 2 jacks, and then hopefully add to the catch limits in the rivers, and finally, if we are really lucky, maybe up the tag limit from 5 to 8....
