Salmon/steel fly rod for under $180?

That's fine by me.=) I've landed plenty on them.

I have no doubt. I only say it is too light because i am more concerned for the health of any hooked natives, not because i dont think the rod is capable.

Don't worry, I knew what was implied and I do agree that it is always important to keep native fish left with enough juice to make it up river.. Every 7 wt like any other fly rod isn't necessarily equal. Some need to be underlined, and some overlined. The rod I used to use, realistically was an 8 wt labeled as a 7 wt. (including the 8 wt line I typically cast on it)

Likewise, I have a 5 wt that struggles with a 4 wt line.

Just to bring thing back into perspective a little.... This will be his first fly rod for larger fish and he will not have the finesse to start with that you and many others have. Many of you have years of experience fighting larger fish... unlike me!

I would therefore suggest that an 8wt is a good starting point and while he indicated that he doesn't want to buy cheap and then have to buy again, we all know what happens when someone is captured by the DARK Force. I look forward to hearing of your exploits with your new equipment Pinky.
