Are there steelhead/salmon in there right now? I am completely new to fly fishing for steelhead and salmon. I want to get into it I have the gear just need the direction. I am not asking for spots or anything just simply asking if I go fish the fly only section of the Umpqua will I have a chance at catching either or should I focus my efforts down lower for Coho?

I have some guys working at Soda Springs right now and one of them has been hammering steelhead lately. Coho should be pushing up in there soon.

I recommend hiking up to the hotsprings if the fish aren't biting! We used to hike up there in the snow every year. Pretty awesome area. One of my favorite rivers.

Ok great, I am still debating going to the upper Rogue or if I should fish the North Umpqua. I just want to increase my chances at actually catching a fish. I could also go and try some Coho down on the main Umpqua but I couldn't get them to bite the last time I was there in perfect weather conditions making me think that may be starting to wind down in the spots I fish.

I headed up there and threw for a bit saw a steelhead jump twice clear out of the water and it was a nice fish although with some drifts over its head it seemed disinterested in my wares. Have heard of a few fish been caught and there are dead Chinook everywhere which is a great sign!
