Met a decades old buddy, and his daughter, and Detroit Reservoir this morning. One
rod was rigged with a dodger and 10 - 12” leader to a worm trailer. The other rod set up was a dodger and 10
- 12” leader to an Olive green bead head Woolly Bugger. Flatlined at 50’ - 100’ behind the boat; probably no deeper than 20, maybe 25’.
Got about an even number of strikes on each rig. But those that struck the fly did
so VORACIOUSLY! They lept out of the drink, tail danced, and fought better than
with the worm rig. Plus the worms would be picked OFF a lot—and are a hassle to replace with fresh bait. Never had to do that with a Woolly Bugger! Which meant more time with the fly covering more water.
I may not use worms again for trolling! Maybe.
