Fish DO Exist in the Lower Deschutes

After three trips out there, finally lander one, tiny as it was. Hooked it with a zebra midge hand tied by yours truly to boot.

    Happy Fishin’ New Year!

I sure hope so. They seemed fairly strong when they swam away.

    Happy Fishin’ New Year!

After a skunky couple of trips to the Deschutes and the Metolius, closed out 2025 with a couple costal cutthroats on Gales Creek today.

    Noob on the Deschutes

Skunked! Stopped at Taylor Lake on the way, lost my woolly bugger. Then, right as we were getting in the truck to move on, several sizable trout started surfacing. The water was definitely turbid downstream of the White River. All and all, it was a beautiful setting to practice casting. 😅

    Noob on the Deschutes

Ha! That’s why I’m heading out to the desert. Maupin looks relatively dry this week and the water flow up river seems stable.🤞

    Noob on the Deschutes

Thinking about exploring the lower Deschutes this weekend, specifically the section that runs along the BLM access road from Sherars Falls south to Maupin. I don't have waders so I'm hoping chucking nymphs from the bank with my 9' 5 wt will due. Will I need a Columbia River Basin endorsement, or...

    Baby Steelhead?

Caught this beast on Gales Creek this afternoon. It’s face was hardly bigger than the size 20 red zebra midge sticking through it.

    First Fish on a Fly

My bad, @troutdude. I assumed that catch-and-release on the inflows was okay since Hagg Lake is formed by Scoggins Creek which is a tributary of the Tualatin River. Does the following only apply to creeks/streams that flow directly into the river?

    First Fish on a Fly

@troutdude Word. I’ve been exploring Gales Creek and the Hagg Lake inflows.
