Get a sandshrimp pump... go pump your own shrimp.(Like 3 or 4 dozen) Use a 2-3ft dropper and about a 2-3ft leader or so with a #2 hook. You will catch the crap outta the sea trout this way, with the occasional bass.
Why do you want to target a species that is closed for retention?
You can keep the chinook outta there! ;)
Oh and dont(get caught) fishing above Five Rivers, it's closed again this year. :( Sucks cause some of my favorite spinner water is right above Five Rivers.
That fly is KILLER for steelhead! Someone on the S. Santiam breaks a lot of those things off, cause I find them all the time. I started drift fishing them and hooking up! The cutts love them too!
Talked to an old guy in Newport that used to hook them through the nose and use a dropper weight system.. fished right off the crabbing dock by the bridge. He said it works. Haven't tried this yet myself.
I'm sure if they're pic was on all the fishing forums they'd be so embarrassed they wouldn't do it again. Just send the pics to OSP.. they'll get on it. There is a reward sometimes if you ask for it.
