    Whats your favorite loop knot?

Perfection all the way. A little practice and you'll be able to do it blindfolded.

Check the water levels before you go!

Stopped by the Crooked on my way back from Bend this week, only to come upon a construction project IN THE RIVER. Not quite sure what they were doing (I think reinforcing the bank up against the road), but they had diverted the flow into a narrow channel. How could they do that? Easy: they've...

Steel is all the way up

Spent Saturday before the deluge hunting steel and had a few bites before landing this pretty girl. Can confirm that steel is all the way through the lower section up to the Pelton Dam. Only gets better from here on out :)

    Eugene/Springfield area fly fishing

North Fork & Middle Fork of the Willamette are both good stretches of water. Head up to Westfir on Rt 58 where the two join. Fish the Middle Fork up to the dam and fish the North as far up as you care! The basic patterns all fish - North Fork is a smaller stream as you head upriver, Middle is a...

Novice looking for small trout streams

Middle Fork of the Willamette and the North Fork of the Middle Fork of the Willamette. Both good trout fisheries.

    It's harder than I thought

If you got fish to rise to your presentations, then you are doing something right! I only got 3 to hand on about 9 takes on the Big D last week using pinched barbs. Landed pretty much everything that I hooked on nymphs, but there's something about a 16" redband coming straight at you creating a...

    Spey help!

Thanks, everyone. I think this confirms my next step, which is to get a Skagit head on there and see if that matches the rod better. Good news with LL Bean is they will take the rod back no questions asked if I decide to do that later :)

    Spey help!

Scientific Anglers® Mastery Spey Evolution Fly Line is what they wrapped on it. Now that I look at that line, they could have put either the 470 or 530 weight line on it since the rod is a 7/8 weight rod...

    Spey help!

This may be an absurd question, but I recently bought this rod and had it out on the Clack for practice yesterday at Barton. It came with a "regular" spey line (not Skagit). It's only 12'6", so not the biggest, but the tip section seems awfully soft. My spey cast is crap, granted, but it just...

A day on the Big D and my first steel!

Had a great float down the Warm Springs - Trout Creek section last weekend and hooked into 2 beautiful bull trout (no pic, quick release), a pair of 15" resides, and a few whitefish, one of which took me well into my backing and started the pulse quickening :) But the real joy was my first...

    Fly line question

Floating line for sure. If you need to get down a bit, split shot can get you there. If you need to get down deeper/faster, you can swap out the leader and put on a poly (sinking) leader, and that's a lot cheaper than an additional spool w/line.
