    Steelhead fishermen

I am positive (and have often argued, over both cheap and expensive beer) that there is a doctoral sociology thesis waiting to be written, concerning the cultural divide between fly and gear fishing.

    Wading boot advice

My first pair of wading boots were a pair of chucks with carpet glued to the bottom. They worked, kinda. Bottom line up front - look for a boot with an MSRP of $100-200. You will save money in the long run, unless you are wading 2 or 3 times per year. You can find closeouts that will get...

    Fishing tags

Legally, you can do whatever you want with it. With that said, that paper probably has petrol products, so I don't recommend putting it in your pipe and smoking it. In past years they have done raffles with the the tags that were turned in, but I don't know if that is the case for 2013. The...

    On my very first cast.

Just to be clear - the Echo solo in question has never had issues with the ferules - I assume that is because I am an excellent caster. :flex: Here, rather, the break is in the top section of the blank, several inches above the highest connection. I assume that there was a pre-existing stress...

What's the correct way to solve this problem?

On Reels - Both Redington and Okuma have been mentioned - but with both of these brands you need to make sure you are buying one of their machined entries to secure the tighter clearances you want. For Redington, you are looking at the Drift, Rise, or Delta. Skip the Drift - its a click and...

What's the correct way to solve this problem?

Try Pam on your guides, and fly line dressing on your line. Ross CLA - for what I would call a mid-range reel, at approximately $275 for reel and $100 ish for a spool. It is Machined and Made in the USA. I also understand that Echo's Ion reel (which is first cast, then machined) is a...

    Too cold!!!

Any place where you can buy tackle should have some sort of fly/line floatant. Folks in the old-days used WD-40, but it has some bad VOCs, and I wouldn't recommend using it.

    Too cold!!!

Use floatant on your line, and Pam on your guides!

    On my very first cast.

Sadly, that's my only steelhead rod, so my day was over before it started. Glad to have a warranty. I'll call Echo tomorrow. Hopefully they can hook me up sooner than later - I could smell the steelhead coming up the willamette. It was beautiful out there with the ice on the bank and the sun...

Steelhead questions from a beginner wanting to respect the fish and

To be perfectly fair, I was swinging at times, but also nymphing at others, and the sun was high and bright. Probably, I was too low in the river as well. But, we asked 5 rafts as they passed, and they had not had a good day (no-fish) - add that to the handful of hikers in the same situation...
