    Info on decline of salmon

There is no evidence that distinct salmon runs existed before the last ice age. The study I referenced was an example that is based on, and helps prove, the science that speciation of salmon is likely <10,000 years old. This speciation was accelerated by the development (for some reason) of...

    Info on decline of salmon

How and why salmon/trout start to migrate in very interesting and something that has received allot of study. Based on genetic studies, scientist can determine how many generations it takes to see a difference in the genes of a species. The conclusions for salmon is that the diversity seen in...

    8 inch crawdad ... big ..... pic

I've trapped crawdads on the Alsea, Marys and Luckiamute and have gotten a few 8 to 9 inchers. As far as number in a trap, I've caught over 75 in one trap (box style, about 18" X 12" X 12") - it was packed about 1/2 full! I recall tossing about 1/2 of them back in to grow up a bit. Use a...

Fun little fish on the Alsea

I hit a few spots on the upper Alsea for trout on Monday. Using spinners (panther martins) or a double nymph setup, my buddy and I caught 56 fish in about 2.5 hours and had many more hookups. The largest was ~13 inches, most were 4 - 6 inches. Tons of fun though. I kept one for dinner...

St. Louis ponds, what fish are in what ponds?

I've been to St. Louis Ponds at times when many of the ponds were interconnected by high water. This happened in 2005 and in 2010 (and maybe last year) so I would imagine the populations have been homogenized. But, some species may do better in some ponds.

Questions about Colorado Lake (east of Corvallis)

I've heard the same as Troutdude - I went looking for access but you need to get permission from a land owner - no public access, or that's what I was told... ODFW would know for sure (let us know if there is access!). I've driven around it very slowly a couple of times and not seem any public...
