If you think there is no winter steel hatchery program on the North you should go to the rock creek hatchery website. The only reason that most of the fish return on the south is because they are moved to and reared in Canyonville.
Huh? I live on the backwater of the dam and check the ladder very regularly. I rarely see a clipped winter run steelhead, and all the others in there looking are whining about it.
Here is a link to a you tube video showing how to use a tool made for tying fly fishing knots. I bought one of these tools when I first started fly fishing but the instructions were not very good. This video made it look as easy as it is and I now this tool is in my vest at all times.

:) You will soon want to learn to say fly rod. Anyway, welcome to the dark side. It starts out slowly and then you will want to start tying your own flies. Then... Stick with it and take a lesson or two. There is a bit larger learning curve but there are lots of people who have been there and...
The South Umpqua river follows the I 5 in Roseburg. There is some real nice action for smallies in the river behind the fairgrounds. Exit 123 I-5
Usual bass fare I guess. I use small green nymph type flies.

The spring chinook run on the N. Umpqua is all but done. The ones I'm seeing now look real tired. The summer steelhead are beginning to show up now and even seeing some nice sized ones to boot.

Good pair of hemostats clipped to a shirt pocket. A nipper with a hook eye cleaner and a hook file. Floatant if you are using dries. Almost forgot the nail knot tool.

Hey MM, I rode my bike out D.R. road past the secret place. Evidently not so secret cuz there were two guys getting their gear ready to FLOAT TUBE:dance: in there. Also saw a car that probably had bank fishers. Time to break out the belly boat and get some.

Mooseman is right. Quite a few steehead coming through and the spring chinooks are beginning to show. Careful though, if you hook a big springer whilst riding your toon. You could be towed a long way.

Lots of rain today. The river is up and could mean a very wild float. I saw some steelies in the fish ladder yesterday. I guess if you gotta fish I'd say be careful.
