Why such a closely guarded secret?

In my opinion there are very few, if any secret fishing holes left, for many reasons. However, if one is willing to put in the time and effort quality fishing and solitude can be found. If one has such places to fish they have the choice of sharing them with others or keeping it to themselves...

    Owyhee fly fishing for browns.

One of those well kept secrets that is now a home water of the Boise crowd. And yes, spawning browns should be left alone... Fish away from the redds.

    Steelhead fly suggestions

All very proven traditional Deschutes patterns. The Max Canyon, originated by Doug Stewart, is a blend of black and orange with a bit of white calf hair in the wing, produced well in one of his favorite Mack's Canyon runs. Doug is a wiley master of deception...

Steelhead in deep very slow moving water

I would leave these fish alone as they are not usually good fly opportunities. They are usually in a dour mood. Look for steelhead runs that are about walking speed and 3-5 ft. deep. Start at the top of the run and work your way down a step or two after each cast. Keep moving and cover as much...

    Fly line question

Good post. Good info about fishing dry flies with an intermediate. Almost sounds like Denny Rickards talking. I'm glad I don't have to pick one line. I love my intermediate and fish it most of the time. It's just nice to have the dry line handy.

    Clack or Sandy...need some advice

To me the most exciting thing about catching a Steelhead on a swung fly is the take. The fight and landing is nice too, but in my opinion secondary to the take. When a steelhead takes fly, lure, bait that is dead drifted it is usually a hesitation or subtle tug and you set the hook. With a...

    Carp on Columbia slough?

Nice fish. The pic looks like it was taken in full sun. Did you have targets throughout the day?

New to fly fishing, where to go within 75 miles of Beaverton

Another reason is the weight of the fly line propels the fly. A standard 5wt. line for a single had is not capable of appropriately casting most steelhead flies as they are too large and heavy for the fly line.

    Fly line question

If I could have only one line it would be a floating one. My second line would be the intermediate. That is because the floating line is more versatile. It's pretty hard to fish a dry fly on a sinking line, but you can fish a sinking fly on a floating line. I fish stillwaters from a float...

    Carp on Columbia slough?

I parked just east of the 205 bridge in a parking area off Marine DR. today and walked along the dike above the river. There were shallow shoals along the bank and I saw one guy wading and looking for fish. A few other guys were still fishing with bait. I didn't see any carp but it looked...

    Carp on Columbia slough?

Where 185th crosses the slough head east past the pump house. Near the 168th and Airport Way canoe ramp there is a pond short ways west on the foot path. There is access between 138th and 148th off Whiteaker Way. These looked like good spots to me. A canoe or kayak would be a good way to...

    Carp on Columbia slough?

I have not fly fished for Carp for many years and that was only a couple times. Now that I have the time I have been looking into it. I am interested because I like sight fishing for large fish with a fly rod and there isn't much travel time involved. As you may know, they are known as the...
