Where to go near Newport on spring break ?

I am going to be camping with the family at South Beach in Newport during spring break. Any ideas on steelhead streams of choice I should try ? I have fished the Siletz a bunch but was wondering if you have any suggestions.......... Nestucca ? Any small streams within 50 miles of Newport you think would be fun and interesting ?

Thanks for your input....

Head south on 101 to Waldport....then take hwy 34 and follow the Alsea River.......there are folk on this forum that could give you some tips. But just driving on hwy 34 I'm sure you can find a few good holes.

I'd suggest targeting late run Steel, on the 'Tucca. There's some BIGGIES in there.

I fish the Alsea religiously! By far my personal favorite winter steelhead river. I've had a good year on that river so far, floating in my Koffler or bank fishing. I'd say I've caught more fish from the bank than either of the floats I like to do. (Mill Creek boat launch to Campbell Park boat launch, or Campbell Park to Salmon Berry Park boat launch). But like Irishrover mentioned, anywhere up and down hwy 34 you can find "perfect" steelie holes. I live in the Springfield/Eugene area, so it takes me about 45 min to get up there, and anywhere on Fish Hatchery RD. all the way up to the hatchery (maybe 1 mile) can be good bank fishing. Then from Fish Hatchery RD. on down hwy 34 there are quite a few pull over spot's that anyone that can read a river, and understand the way steelhead live. Should have no problem finding great little tail out's, pocket water where the fish stack up in, and really good little riffles and slow swirls where a pink/white either 1/8th oz to 1/4 oz jig's (depending on the speed and the depth of the water) and a float can and is a DEADLY little combo. At least it has been for me this year. I'm a drift fisherman all the way. I didn't even own a spinning rod and much "bobber & jig" gear at all, until this year. Never had the need to. But I can say now, I was truly missing out. It's a really fun method of fishing that allowed me to fish stretches of the Alsea that years before I wasn't able to fish, cause I only drift fished. After purchasing an AWESOME 8' 6" Lamiglass Cascade Pro spinning rod, and throwing a nice Quantum spinning reel on there. It is just as important as any of my 9ft bait casting set up's. I NEVER even leave the truck to walk down and fish without it. Also, watched 1 guy hook 4 nice chromer's, and he was alone on the other side of the river at Whitikar creek (Siuslaw) having to net his fish rod in 1 hand net in the other. Using the same jig and bobber for all the fish, he got his limit after losing a couple at the net. But there were probably 15 people drift fishing rite near us, yet the "jig & bobber" guy was the only guy to even TOUCH a fish all morning!!! I heard a couple guy's hooked up a ways down river. But as for the 15 people that were fishing near us, bobber & jig man was the only one to land fish, and he hooked 4 banked 2 and was on his way home all within a couple hours. That goes to show ya, once you think you got it down... There is always something else to learn. I hope this info helps, Good Fishing-

Sounds like a bunch off advertising more than help. I'd go with the alsea or siulaw but that's cause that's all I've fished

Wow you guys must be closed minded, because fuson22 just gave away a bunch of knowledge and you call it "advertising" , you sound like very observant fishermen to me lmao!....i mean its not every day that a fisherman gives a newb experienced info like that especially on the alsea. just mind boggling to know you would put down someone trying to help someone else?.

im not putting him down and never said it wasn't help, did i? no i just said it was more advertising than help. but it was help throwing out name brands like that from a guy that has a company picture for his picture ya its advertising for you to think its not must mean you have the hes a big shot and i want to be cool fever. he said "After purchasing an AWESOME 8' 6" Lamiglass Cascade Pro spinning rod, and throwing a nice Quantum spinning reel on there." what does that have anything to do with telling some one where to fish? also said "floating in my Koffler " ya is it still not advertising? it would probably be very helpful to some one new but im just saying its advertising dont put words in peoples mouths.

Well brandon doesn't work for ne of those companys just happened to he a nwk avatar and he was jut referencing the brand because thats the one he uses. Sry for ne one thinking hes supporting those companys. It just sounds better than saying oh ya i put the jig on a rod with a spinning reel.

Advertising? yeah... That's TOTALLY what I'm doing.... I remember when I was pissy little girl cause I could never touch a steel head too bud. It's alright, we feel your pain, lol. But just so you know, I don't work for or have any sponsor's of ANY of the brands I talked about at all. They are just the makers of the equipment that I personally use and NWK is a cool spot to get relevant info about fish, water levels, and a blog spot for people who "actually fish" and give and take info about fishing to newbies or seasoned slayer's. If you don't like it or don't want to use it. Then don't! I couldn't care less. I am just talking to SOMEONE ELSE about MY experiences, and giving some helpful advice. NOWHERE in there did I mention or say ANYTHING about YOU or to YOU. So the fact that YOU even think you need to be in this conversation at all is ridiculous! I will always continue to help out newbies where I can, because I always had guy's & gal's that helped me when I was getting into it years ago. That's just paying it forward, and fishing, and sportsmanship. That's what fishing and these forum's are for. Something you obviously know NOTHING about. So before you make yourself look like even MORE of a fool, you should probably just mind your business and try and locate the " I can't catch fish from a barrel " forum and take your assumptions there. They sure aren't doing you any good here. Thank you Stetson (Tacoma steelheader) for trying to tell this lame I'm not a freakin "salesman" or a "sponsored fisherman". I guess if you mention what kind of line you use and the brand of your "local" boat maker that makes awesome drift boat's in your home town, then your automatically a freakin shoe salesman! lol. That's alright though, at least now you know I'm not. And please save your precious keyboard and don't try and make this into some pissing match cause I'm not into it. I said what I had to say, so good luck to ya and get out and catch that 1st fish! I promise you'll be hooked and spend your time fishing not making assumptions on a fishing forum. Some people take these forums seriously and enjoy talking and sharing info with other fisherman. You must have got lost- See ya.

Not sure why there is even NWK referencing going on here....just because someone has a logo for a company does not mean that they work for that company...
Just because I rarely post on here doesn't mean that i didn't contribute tons of info to this forum....so all you newbies go check out past info..Over 3000 posts, most of which were posts with full descritions.....not a crap comment about someone elses info..... I origonally stopped posting on here because there was so much childish behavior going on....Advertising is ment to help anglers find good tackle that is local and not taking our money to foriegn places, so if you think I post on here to advertise....well then you will just miss out on fish porn that I got on good solid tackle made in our back door......
