I fish the Alsea religiously! By far my personal favorite winter steelhead river. I've had a good year on that river so far, floating in my Koffler or bank fishing. I'd say I've caught more fish from the bank than either of the floats I like to do. (Mill Creek boat launch to Campbell Park boat launch, or Campbell Park to Salmon Berry Park boat launch). But like Irishrover mentioned, anywhere up and down hwy 34 you can find "perfect" steelie holes. I live in the Springfield/Eugene area, so it takes me about 45 min to get up there, and anywhere on Fish Hatchery RD. all the way up to the hatchery (maybe 1 mile) can be good bank fishing. Then from Fish Hatchery RD. on down hwy 34 there are quite a few pull over spot's that anyone that can read a river, and understand the way steelhead live. Should have no problem finding great little tail out's, pocket water where the fish stack up in, and really good little riffles and slow swirls where a pink/white either 1/8th oz to 1/4 oz jig's (depending on the speed and the depth of the water) and a float can and is a DEADLY little combo. At least it has been for me this year. I'm a drift fisherman all the way. I didn't even own a spinning rod and much "bobber & jig" gear at all, until this year. Never had the need to. But I can say now, I was truly missing out. It's a really fun method of fishing that allowed me to fish stretches of the Alsea that years before I wasn't able to fish, cause I only drift fished. After purchasing an AWESOME 8' 6" Lamiglass Cascade Pro spinning rod, and throwing a nice Quantum spinning reel on there. It is just as important as any of my 9ft bait casting set up's. I NEVER even leave the truck to walk down and fish without it. Also, watched 1 guy hook 4 nice chromer's, and he was alone on the other side of the river at Whitikar creek (Siuslaw) having to net his fish rod in 1 hand net in the other. Using the same jig and bobber for all the fish, he got his limit after losing a couple at the net. But there were probably 15 people drift fishing rite near us, yet the "jig & bobber" guy was the only guy to even TOUCH a fish all morning!!! I heard a couple guy's hooked up a ways down river. But as for the 15 people that were fishing near us, bobber & jig man was the only one to land fish, and he hooked 4 banked 2 and was on his way home all within a couple hours. That goes to show ya, once you think you got it down... There is always something else to learn. I hope this info helps, Good Fishing-
