Where sleeping plugs lay...

I was lucky enough to start my salmon fishing season today.

"But RWS! Fish have been around since late July and early August!"

I know.. I know... Simmer down kids...

Ive had a good weekend. Was lucky enough to punch my tag on my first Archery Elk this last Saturday... Weekend before that, my buddy got a 300" coast Roosevelt...

So Ive been busy.

Woke up this morning and thought I better go and do some plug-n-run. My favorite way to nail fall fish. Went 1-2, both bright fish, and had 3 other good hits that didn't stick.

And, oh yeah.. This fish was about 15 miles out of tide water, in a sad excuse of a river. Go figure.

Here is us with my buddy's bull from 2 weeks ago:

And here is mine from last Saturday, called him into 5 yards:

Kind of made a mutant thread, between wild beast and slippery salmon.

Enjoy the photo's...

Nice RWS! Plugs are my favorite way to get em too.. Nothing like a rod doubling!

Got out on my first trips inside the bay the last 2 days. Needless to say bobbers were dunkin!

Cheers

Yessss. Needed to see some upriver plug carnage. Will be doing some of that soon myself just as soon as I get back from walking another 60 miles in Seattle in about 10 days

Wait.... didn't anyone tell you? You can't catch kings on wiggle warts! Please, next thing yer going to tell us is you weren't using a flasher either.

Now is the time to do'er. Once the rain hits and the river goes up you wont be able to wade out on top of the slots.

Am I seeing that right? Did the clip on your plug start to fail on you? Congrats on the fish and hunt! BTW, I've found success casting and retrieving plugs too (as opposed to backing them down a slot).

You're seeing 20/20 for sure. She about come UN-buttoned on me.

Probably my thumbs fault.

And zero casting my plugs for me.

I like to take advantage of the summer time flow. Literally wade out in the stream, over top of any kind of narrow slot, or obstruction where I know a chinook would be resting or hiding, and shove it right in there face...

Theres been plenty of times I haven't touched a fish, but I can't think of a time that when Ive had a fish on doing this that it wasn't my first attempt at the water I aim to fish.

If they're sitting there, they take it.

Well she hung on long enough! I've been casting them only because there really haven't been any slots where I fish like you describe but I'm on the lookout for them. And not all holes are ideal for casting them either.
