Moved up here from California last year, and we used to do night fishing until the crack of dawn, is there any place around here that you're able to go? some of the places i've been to close at night. thanks.

I live in Portland, just looking for cool places to fish i can go fresh or salt and i also have a kayak that i take with me to go angling some time. Are there any streams within an hour of Portland that you can go for trout?

Are you trying to combine night fishing, from a kayak, for trout, in a river, an hour from PDX?

no different days trying to find out all that i was suggesting, i already went crabbing with the kayak at netarts that was cool... people said don't kayak on the willamette because current will take you down lol... mainly i do want to camp out for night fishing though

From what I've gathered, it seems to be illegal to fish for trout or other salmonoids at night in Oregon waters. You can ask ODFW for clarification, and probably best if you do so.
You can fish for other species such as catfish, stripped bass, and walleye at night.
Try the John Day River up by the Narrows for channel cat, if you have a boat (long ways from the launch at the Columbia, in a yak), or there is an overland route to a BLM Campground at Biglow Cyn.
I know it's more than an hour from Portland, but If you're like me and love good channel catfishing, that's the best I've found in Oregon.
But you should be able to fish the Columbia or Willamette, both at night, from any legal access point that isn't Day Use Only.

thank you, i don't mind the drive i read up on john daly thank you for that, But i didn't klnow they had striped bass up here? thought that was only in california on this side of the coast... can you verify that there are stripers here?

On the coast the Smith, Umpqua, and Coquille rivers all have Stripers. No stripers on the John Day, but it is a great river for kayaking and night fishing.

The night fishing I was referring to was statewide. To the best of my knowledge, striped bass are only found on the south coast and rivers here in Oregon, having migrated up the coast from the San Francisco bay/Delta area after being transport there from the St Lawrence Seaway around the turn of the 20th century as a potential commercial fish stock. They may eventually make it to the Columbia, but that will likely be many years hence.

Stripers have been caught in the Columbia and Willamette.

And striped marlin have been caught off the Oregon coast, but you don't see people fishing for them.

Sure you do. Most of the Oregon rec tuna fleet run a way, way, back line hoping for a billfish while catching albacore.

Besides, I wasn't commenting on fishable populations of Willamette or Columbia striper, only that they were present and had been for awhile. Not many years hence.

just found this in a post by Trout Dude
Troopers received information that the suspect was unlawfully angling for wild steelhead in the John Day River. Troopers conducted surveillance on the suspect and two other individuals for almost two months while the suspect and his friends broke fishing regulations, including night-fishing on the John Day River. Troopers charged the subject and his friends with more than 30 angling crimes.

Don't know what to say about that!

    Game Fish

Salmon, shad, steelhead, sturgeon, trout, whitefish, largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, hybrid bass, striped bass, bluegill, catfish, crappie, sunfish, yellow perch, and walleye.
    • Harvest Method: Angling.
    • Restrictions: It is unlawful to:
      • Angle for or take salmon, shad, steelhead, sturgeon, trout or whitefish except during daylight hours (one hour before sunrise until one hour after sunset). See exceptions for specific waterbodies.

The way I read that is that night fishing for catfish is legal.
I specifically looked for the John Day River for exceptions, and there are none listed for that river where catfish are concerned.

I enjoy fishing Miller, but it's a long drive for me. Have you been up this year? I'm going to give it a week or two to settle down and then give it a try.
