Fishing off the dock at Champeog, I got a 8" or so fish i fifure was some sorr of trout. Dark blue top, bright silver below. Threw him back, then thought "dang, no picture!"

Anyway, wanting to know just what it was.

TIA

Possibly a coho smolt?

Without a photo there's no way to positively ID, however there are a ton of salmon and steelhead smolt (juveniles) in the river right now on their way to the salt

trout like but shiny silver, no spots and a fairly good forked tail are good indications of a salmon smolt, especially coho...

Thanks, all.

I had the thought - "that looks just like a miniature steelhead"...but I thought "wait, isn't a steelhead just an ocean-going rainbow ? It would look like every other rainbow until it hits the sea, no ?"

I didn't (know I should) pay attention to the tail, I was going by color.

Thing is, I can only recognize a fish once I've caught one and had someone tell me what it is. Then if I catch another I have a pretty good idear of what it is.

I'm pretty sure I'll be able to spot a bass, but what kind... same thing with a catfish.

my money is on Barracuda.
