Umpqua steelhead fishing

Hey everyone , its been a slow year and haven't fished much nor posted much. My hometown water , the South Santiam didn't have very good numbers this year and I started Way too early and burnt myself out , so in the prime of things I was sort of over it.

Anyways on to my Reason for posting , The wife and I recently bought ourselves a travel trailer and were planning on making some trips this winter in it. My brother n Law was telling me about an RV park in Elkton right on the banks of the Umpqua. We were planning on heading down there in early to mid Dec. Have any of you spent any time winter fishing the Umpqua , that far up river. I appreciate any information , we are going to make the trip regardless , but it would be nice if there were any suggestions on where exactly I should be heading on the river to target the mighty winter steelhead.

Thanks Again everyone
Jer

I love that stretch of the Umpqua. Lots of great water just upstream of Elkton. If you have a drift boat or a sled there is some fairly mellow water that is easy to fish in. If you're bankin' it, lots of other people fishing around there so it's probably good too.

Best,

Its the Umpqua... the most Famous steelhead river in the world.. you will do just fine-

Sawyers Rapids RV and Campground....

One of my favorite rivers! You two are going to have a wonderful time and make tons of memories there. I hope you will have an internet connection, you know we gotta have reports! And fish porn! ;)

I live in Elkton and the RV park is right in town. At that time of the year the fish are probably still going to be pretty low in the river unless we get some crazy amounts of rain. Sawyer Rapids RV park will be a lot closer to the fish but still not too far of a drive to reach the lower stretches, only 50 min to Reedsport probably 20-25 to Sawyer Rapids.

Thanks for all the replies everyone, that's what makes this forum so great all the great advice and help.

Steelydan if it's ok, I'll probably be sending you a direct message before we head down there to get some bank access areas from you and maybe some suggestions .

Thanks Again
Jer

Sawyers rapids isn't a secret so I take it, it's ok to talk about? Is it better to fish the rapids from the RV park side? Or across the river? I have seen a few guys fishing it from the far side, but never fished it myself. Any input would be great...

You are gonna need a boat to get to the other side Shawn....
