Tagged fish?

so last night i caught a tagged summer, tiny little thing maybe 4 pounds, didn't fight was all wrapped up in line. but he had a tag in him but there were no numbers on the tag, it was just a thin piece of plastic. so did some one cut it off and release this fish or did they do this to keep snaggers from spoting taged fish? i dont have a picture of the tag ill try to find it somewhere but i dont know if my mom tossed it or not.

on a side note the mckenzie is a mess, i anchord in the pressure hole. had guys on the bank pointing and laughing at me, kinda odd but there was a lot of people i hooked a couple trout and every other cast pulled a line off the bottom thats ridiculous. then went down hooks and corkies all over on the river bottom, a few dead fish, big fish steelhead and salmon size. then got a diver with about 150 foot of line on it still. seen lots of fish but they werent biting. the fish i got felt like a trout and i was expecting a trout then thought it was a redside cause it was heavy, then finally found out it was a steelhead right infront of the boat when it jumped twice and only took a 5 ft run then into the net. very disappoited in the fight, but when wrapped in line i guess its hard to move.

oh also, no one on the bank had any fish and none of them touched a fish while i was there, and when i was down below i seen some guy throwing a rope with somthing really heavy on it into the lower end of the hole, what was he doing?

I bet he was dragging for all the snagged lines and hooks ... Lol

i dont know he acted like he was in a hurry, i thought maybe some one lost a pole or somthing

well i just called leaburg hatchery and they said they are no longer tagging them with numbered tags, so must have just been a tag to tell it was recycled

How do you see these fish I have glasses on and have never once seen one. either I'm blind or you have xray vision. lol I just go by the pressure hole most of the time depending on the amout of people. when I do stop I throw jigs just to stay off the bottom away from the snags.

Did you have to go to the far side of the dam to get through or have they let some more water out? thinking of hitting it tonight.

Recycled fish. I saw a dude catch one earlier this year and it had a plastic line coming out of its mouth. He called me over to check it out and it had a small circular device in its gut when he yanked it. It was the 3rd fish he'd caught with one in it - I guess they plant it in the fish's stomach at the falls to see how long it takes for the fish to come up to Leaburg. Pretty wild, i'd never seen that before. Same dude who caught that 18lber in Tanners thread.
Hit the pressure hole early in the am this morning hoping for a b-day steelhead. I guess there was a fatal crash on 126 so I had to take a detour. Was still the 1st there and ended up 0/2, kinda bummed but at least I got to play. Was SLOW - I saw 5 fish hooked in 7 hours - and 2 were mine. 2 were landed though, unlike mine :( Crazy year - there were a few great days early last week but it slowed down again. Man was it wet out there today!

the transmiters are worth 25 dollars and i thought were only in salmon my uncle got one. the steelhead just have a yellow tag like you see on clothes when you buy them stuck at their dorsal fin. years past they had numbers and they wanted them reported.

The recycled fish are getting tags put in them to give anglers more opportunity to catch them as well as inform the hatchery folks what this fish has been to the hatchery already and isn't needed for restocks.

I caught a tagged fish with a transmitter in its stomach . I went on the odfw site and they say to let them go because they are tracking there movement and they are inedible because they drugged them up to get the transmitter in . So if it has a transmitter in it also not just tagged let em go

Good info, thanks. Chances of landing one are pretty slim but i'll remember that.

they should do some more education in regards to what the transmitters look like for the fisherfolks who DO care but do not know what they look like.

sorry i didn't see your post, i have been fishing my whole life and know where to look and what to look for and can just see them, i may have excepptional vision because i can see deer and elk before everyone else also, but yeah pressure hole is good if you hit it at the right time, i just sit and see what people are doing make a few cast with somthing they aint using, basicaly anything thats not 6 ft long and only has a corki it seems.

but yeah you have to go up and down on the far side, a couple years back we had a big flood and it puched that boulder right into the middle of that chute so when the water drops now you can't use it. other than that not many problems for me, other than steelies not biting and salmon numbers way low.

I have no clue about the tagged fish, however my buddy and I were up fishing at Leaburg last week when a buryly gentleman showed up with his grappling hook and rope, and fishing gear and put on his chest waiters got into the water and started throwing that hook about until it was snagged beyond his strength to pull up in which case he walked back to the shore and used a come-along to pull out the strap. My buddy went to talk to him and confirmed that he was pulling out all the sh*t line that gets hung up and broke off so that he can increase his chances of not being snagged up on others lines.
Have a good one!

I've seen that up there before. I'm cool with it, get that junk out of there. Sucks when there is braided line in the river and it keeps cutting your line. I haven't been up there since early last week, hope the fishing has picked up some for everyone.

I agree went up this evening from 6:00 pm until 9:00 pm with nothing. I did see one jump then as I was leaving saw that some guy had caught one.

Bummer. I was fishing at the pressure hole with some old timers and they said this must be the worst year they can remember. There were a few good days about 2 weeks ago and things were looking up but then poof it went back to nothing. I saw at least 15 fish get pulled out of that hole 2 weeks ago today and I ended up 1/4. Had a great day though! I usually don't post info like that but I don't think it matters much this year. 1 tagged, 1 foul hooked and about 15 lost for me so far. Horrible numbers, they don't seem to be grabbing the corkies as hard. Now i'm super busy and I wonder if i'll be able to get up there anytime soon, or if its even worth it. This HOT weather can't be helping much either.

This is the the worst June I have fished it in years. Yes few weeks ago were good (what the average action should be at all times during peak run) now I only see one or two banked in the entire stretch and that is SUPER slow for this time of year. I'm blaming the weather for not enough rain and too much heat. I used to pretty much at any time during the day used to be able to go out and bank two on average within a couple hours every time. Now I'm lucky to get a hit in like 5 hours.... :( thinking its only going to get worse...
