New to Oregon

Just purchased my License and Salmon/Steelhead tag. I was looking over the rules and regs and have two questions.

1. The two-rod validation. Do I need to get this if I go fishing with a spinning rod and bring my fly rod. Of course i'm not using them both at the same time, just in case I want to switch it up.

2. What is the Hatchery Tag? Should I buy this as well or does the Salmon/Steelhead tag suffice?

i think the two rod license is mostly for lakes. Like if your trolling you can have two rods out per person. you can bring your spinning and fly rod with you fishing as long as your only using one at a time.

You need a fishing license, and a harvest card ( salmon steelhead tag). No hatchery card.
You can only keep fin clipped steelhead, marked # 6 for species on your harvest card.
Check the regs. For every river you fish. Some allow 3 steelhead most only 2.
You can bring 20 rods if you want just dont fish with more than one at a time.

Yes oregon is a great place, and has some of the best salmon/steelhead fishing in the U.S.
I lived in washington for 3 years and there fishing is good but steelhead fishing in oregon is way better. This forum is pretty cool and full of good people. I have read countless posts of people offering to take anyone willing to go with them fishing in their boat or to there favorite fishing hole. Thats pretty cool in my book.
Almost everyone on here will help you with any questions about rules/regs, or tips and advice you need for fishing in a new area.

Welcome to Oregon, and our forum. FYI, NOT everyone will divulge their favorite holes. So, it's a good idea to refrain from asking for/about specific spots. Or, you can send a PM to a member if you want to ask.

You CANNOT legally use 2 rods (at the same time) in any stream; period. Even with a two-rod license validation. It does not matter what type of fish you are after. You can ONLY use 2 rods at the same time, in lakes, reservoirs, and ponds.

An exception, is that you cannot use two rods to fish for Coho in Siltcoos Lake. You are also not allowed to fish in any of the Columbia River system's "impoundments" with 2 rods. The only other limitation that I'm aware includes: "seasonal or permanent backwaters and sloughs of rivers, streams, creeks, or bays..." All other standing water bodies are fair game.

welcome, the Salmon/Steelhead tag, one per year, is the only place you can tag native fish and you can also tag hatchery fish on it but once it is full, you cannot keep anymore native fish for the rest of the year.

the Hatchery tag is an alternative location to tag clipped fish so as to not fill up your Salmon/Steelhead tag with them; you can buy more than one Hatchery tag in a year.

so it really depends on where you plan to fish and how many native/hatchery fish you plan to keep.

just to add a bit more detail for the Coho season on Siltcoos and Tahkenitch Lakes- the Two Rod is cancelled during the dates of the Coho season (as opposed to being closed based on what you are fishing for):

"Special Gear Restrictions and Closures:
• Closed to two-rod angling for all fish species during coho salmon season Oct. 1-
Dec. 31."

so it really depends on where you plan to fish and how many native/hatchery fish you plan to keep.

WORD: in MANY streams, you CANNOT keep Native steelhead or salmon. If fish in those streams HAVE an intact adipose fin, they are nates (native to that stream / not hatchery raised stock) and MUST BE RELEASED UNHARMED. Only hatchery (adipose fin clipped) fish may be kept and properly tagged--in streams with those regulations.
