What should I bring to trout fish the Wilson with success get to go next weekend and want to be prepared... Only trout fished it once with little success...

First of all, WELCOME!!!

Glad to have you aboard. As some would say, we may be a little OFF ...... :D

As for fishing the Wilson, are you going to be fly fishing or gear fishing (spinner, floating, drift, bait, etc.)?

Also something you might want to know concerning the regs:

Wilson River (Tillamook Co.):
1. Mainstem upstream to South Fork including tidewater
• Open for adipose fin-clipped steelhead entire year.
• Open for adipose fin-clipped spring Chinook salmon April 1-July 31.
• Open for fall Chinook salmon Aug. 1-Dec. 31; except closed for Chinook salmon upstream from railroad bridge Aug. 1-Sept. 15; 2 adult Chinook salmon per day, 4 in any 7 consecutive days, 10 per season in aggregate from all Nehalem, Tillamook, and Nestucca bays and streams.
• Use of bait allowed.
2. Little North Fork
• Open for adipose fin-clipped steelhead Jan. 1-March 31 and Dec. 1-31.
3. South Fork, from mouth upstream to marked deadline at Milepost 1
• Open for adipose fin-clipped steelhead Jan. 1-March 31 and Dec. 1- 31.
4. Tributaries not listed
• Closed.

And one other major factor in your weekend o

Lakes: Open all year
Streams: (including tidewaters and bays): Open May 26-Oct. 31

So, the Wilson is not open to trout fishing until May 26th. Don't want to get a big ol' fat ticket now do ya. :naughty:

Sorry man. :)

But welcome to OFF.

Thank you since I am not going to keep anything could I go "steelhead" fishing? People must accidentally hook into trout once in a while?

If you are going to go Steelhead fishing, then go steelhead fishing, not "steelhead" fishing. There is a difference and an OST (Oregon State Trooper) knows the difference too. :naughty:

Yes, people do accidentally hook into trout occasionally while actually steelhead fishing, but it is unintentional and an OST can, again, tell the difference. Plus if you are going to be using trout gear to go steelhead fishing, it is quite obvious that you are intentionally going after trout and not steelhead, at least it would be obvious to an OST.

Best plan in my opinion, like bigsteel said, wait until trout season opens on the Wilson before you target trout. don't play the "steelhead" game cause in the end, you won't win. :D

Just some friendly advice, nothing against you personally.

Enjoy the water when it opens. :D

P.S. If you really want to get into some trout, you could go to a stream or river that is open year round or opens this Saturday. Just a suggestion. :)

winter steelhead are spawning right now, i wouldnt mess with them, best to wait until trout season begins. If you look in the regulations a few streams in the willamette zone open up this saturday for trout

is there anything stream or river open to trout?

I really have never broken rules and dont want to start with trout fishing thats for sure... But do want to fish in moving water. I live next to hagg lake but it does get old catching stockers... Anyways thanks everyone I would have checked regs but left my book in eastern Oregon and havent picked up a new one.

Up here in the Northern area of the Willamette Zone or Northern part of the NW Zone, ... nope. There is nothing open until May 26th. Sorry. :(

But if you head down to the Salem area or south, there are some streams that are opening for trout season this Saturday. You have to drive a ways though. Or you could go east of the cascades and find year round trout water. Or even further south to the Eugene area or south for even more year round trout waters.

But up here in the northern area, nope, nada, zilch, nothing, zero.

Good luck and don't let the wait kill ya!! hahaha

P.S. You can always check the regs on line too. No need for a book.
