Just got back from a week of leisurely fly fishing at Walton lake. I must admit that I do miss the ocean and the recent post about salmon fishing out of Newport drove that feeling home. However I truly did enjoy cruising around on my Bucks Bag pontoon boat and using the fly gear. The weather was awesome and the wind was not bad. I was always on the water early or at least by 11am. Being retired those early starts are anything before noon, and after plenty of good morning coffee.
I had to the share the water with great fishing partner. It was a large Bald Eagle. He perched himself in a tall Ponderosa Pine tree and would swoop down onto the lake and snatch some unsuspecting trout with his talons. Once he had his fish lined up, he would fly to the nest and feed the young. I was nice to watch that bird fly with a clear blue sky as a back drop. Wish I could have filmed it.
The fishing was good. I used both a sinking line with a zug bug and a floating line with a green wool bugger and a small soft hackle as a dropper. Both performed well.
At some point in time I'll head back there to enjoy the that crisp Ponderosa Pine scented air, and great fishing.
