Female herring

I read an article(from a reputible salmon fisherman) that said something to the effect that salmon will get turned off and won't bite a female herring. After reading this info, I have made a habit of not using females when I cut plug them and find roe...
This weekend we were running out of bait as I cut this herring to find roe....I told the story as I hooked it onto my buddies rig and said,"Prove it wrong"....Long story short. 5 mins later his rod folds with a 15lb chrome hen nook...
Don't believe everything you read...
