This has me confused. Why would kokes and rainbows be holding aroun a hot spring, where presumably the water's a lot warmer than they like? I don't doubt the reports, it just seems counterintuitive to me...

Because that is where the insect hatches occur, especially early in the year.
I fish East a lot and there are always a lot fly fishermen near the hot springs.
