Not for the fainthearted, or city slickers...

East of Cascade Locks there is on the river side of the freeway, a large open area,
Railroad sidetrack, berry patches, overflow lake, brush, railroad gate etc

just beyond this, the freeway comes right up to the river. Look for the railroad 'telephone pole' with 2 white metal bands around it. You must park on the eastbound side of the freeway, there is a large area by a metal wall (rock catcher) where you can pull off, and back in, just east from the fishing area. Tips:

1 go in a group of 3 or more
2 carry everything in one trip
3 Its 'rip-rap' seating/traversing (first-aid kit, fluids, sunscreen, tunes etc)
4 Its deeeeeeppp so bring big expendable weights, a big spool, big pole
5 bring a long handled gaff, the river is too high and dangerous to wrestle a big fish
in the rocks
6. There are monsters in the deep, be prepared to get spooled as your friends
7. Bait? cut up shad? The locals like eel, with flaps cut to shield treble hooks,
which should be hyper sharpened...stores/shops in the Locks may sell it.
8. arrive early to find it safely in low-traffic time

I should note, that lots of people fish sturgeon on the east end of the big park right in town!

Yes, it's been many moons since I bought a tag, probably '80 or 81! The keeper size range was as I recall, between 3 and 6 feet, and when bank fishing, one was often in steep jetty-like terrain, where a gaff was the norm.
