Got out in the driftboat for the first time this fall! wow! Felt great! Day was nice, few rain spurts, but was just happy to be out.
Only "mis-hap" is a net blunder. I didn't secure a salmon net for the trip, and we ended up with a steelhead net, so all of the fish we tried to bank.
alseaalumaweld(Jake) and SteelyFishn(Josh) manned the front of the boat... and we did okay.
So lets get into some porn!
Started off slow, no hook ups until about half way through the drift. Although the first deep slot that Josh laid his bobber in as we floated by a guide went under while I watched and did some dancing while down there, didn't hook up and no real confirmation.
Day progresses, and we enter the "climax" of the drift, and get into water that we really feel will hold the best chances for fish, the bottom half to the take out. First hole we stop at, drop anchor above a hole, and begin backing bobbers straight down from the boat through the meat. This goes on for 20 minutes or so, and Josh yet again, bobber down dances on the top of the water, then goes under. Hook set- NOTHING.
Rebait. Josh goes same line, bobber dances, hook set- FISH
Well, that was fun.
Go back over, anchor same location, 10 mintues (maybe?) go by, I'm hooked up!
Row back over to the gravel bar, get out fight the fish, feel good, lets land this thing, oops its gone.
Play around in that hole for a while, get tired of it, and head on down river.
Play around with some plugs, not really feeling it, waters just not flowing enough to make them effective.
Get about a 1/4-1/2 mile from the take out, make one last stand on a slot, and start floating bobbers.
Work the slot for a while, but nothings happening, so I start going deeper, cause I havent touched to bottom yet. One foot deeper every few casts, I started at 5', and when I hit 9', bobbers gone... FISH!
Fire drill, to the bank, work the fish, its good, its bright, nice lookin fish. Some nice gentleman coming down in a driftboat stop above the hole to let me fight my fish, and we ask to use there net, and they promptly let us have it, and as soon as it gets fully extended, fish off! 2nd time!
So they continue on, and I go back to casting, knowing time is about up, how many chances do I need anyway.
Few casts, bobber down! Set the hook- Nothing... hmm thats weird. Jake looks at me like yeah whatever, I am just being skiddish.
Bait and cast again, bobber down, set the hook- Nothing. Jake tells me I am bumbing the bottom. And I think he's full of ****.
Bait and cast again, bobber down, set the hook- Nothing, Jake again tells me I am on the bottom. And I proceed to tell him I think he's wrong. Back and forth.
Bait and cast again, bobber down, this time I dont set the hook, I just wait and we watch... and through the clear water, my bobber decides to start darting at me... FISH ON!
Oh, and Jake did land a hog!!!
