Any tips for a newbie on the Kilchis?

I was on the Trask 2 wks ago at Lorens and saw a good number of chinook being taken! They seemed a little dark, but surprising to see chinook this late! Someone told me numerous fish were visible! So lets not kill the goose that lays the Golden Egg!

Yep. They have been dumping THOUSANDS of "trophy trout" into Detroit. Some of which, could head up that river.

When using spinners...if you don't lose some on each trip...then your spinners aren't in the strike zone. And most people reel them in way too fast. Which also defeats their purpose. Words of wisdom from Oregon's spinner guru Jed Davis.

They Breitenbush and North Santiam rivers are both stocked generously above Detroit. The issue with the Breitenbush is access. It looks like a nuclear bomb went off in that canyon. There are one or two places you can make it down, and they’re absolutely loaded with pellet head rainbows.

Good looking out. I wasn't sure if that road is open again, for recreational use. The inferno of 2020 really torched that place!

This is what I ALWAYS do, is paint the underside of the blade with a reflective marking of some sort as to enhance the flash behind the tail. Like a target, target circle. Tony

Do you have a picture of what you mean by this? I do a lot of spinner fishing and am currently not doing anything like this

Jed Davis actually puts different colored tape on the front of his blades. But it serves the same purpose either way...to make the lure look different...all of a sudden...to entice a strike. CC may mean something like this:

See Troutdude's vid. scc that's it exactly! the front/top of the blade is for flash to trigger a response. The underside is what the pescal will chase as a target. The long bead I replace with a store bought fish oil pill from Rx department. Some contain several oils, anchovie,sardine and herring. read the label for contents, then I wrap with stretch thd. It milks itself and turns white, dissolves and the trd. holds the swivel. What do you think? Tony

. . . it may be counter intuitive but fishing a spinner on the swing leaving to dead drift is mighty effective . . .

Just in case nobody else gets to this, I wanted to be sure you got some feedback! Both rivers have good bank access but the Nehalem has more and is easier to explore because it’s on a far less busy road. Anywhere between Nehalem Falls and Henry Rierson Spruce Run campground should be productive.

That said, how old is your son? Wading on the coastal streams is very difficult and treacherous. I use wading staffs with all my clients, most still take at least one tumble throughout the course of a day. Be sure he has a tightly cinched wading belt and a staff for balance.

Maybe I can help you a little. I have designed and marketed 100’s of spinners with various blade sizes and body weights. Let’s say you are fishing a #3 French blade with a solid brass body and a siwash hook. Now have the exact same spinner with a #5 French blade and suitable body for the blade size. Assume you quarter angle a cast upstream with the #3, it will take”x’ seconds for it to drop into the fish zone by dropping your rod tip. Then repeat the process with the #5 blade. Using the same process keeping the rod tip down following the swing of the spinner, you’ll see that it takes longer for the lighter spinner to drop into the fish zone. Yes, let it make the full swing until it’s below you. I generally hesitate for just a second or two at the end of the swing. I’ve caught several fish as I hesitate at the end of the swing. This is a productive and great way to learn some basics of spin fishing for trout and steelhead. Have a great outing

Thanks for the info, I appreciate it. He’s 11 — no experience wading. Good age for it? Also, how soon will the searuns be that high in the river (Nehalem)?

Thanks. One issue I have as a spinner beginner is knowing when I’m in the zone, and when to start reeling.
