with good rain all night and a sunny day expected, just had to give it a try on the incoming tide. I was planning to troll upstream right from the launch but wind was coming from the east, so change of plans, head down almost to CG station and start fishing. it ended up being a good plan.
just before we get up by the big dune, after seeing a few deep kings on the sonar- Fish ON....grab the rod, check that it is a good hook-up and start working it in with plans to hand it off to the Mrs. but the fish hasn't made any big runs and it comes up near the boat and it is good sized so I am expecting a big run soon and just as it takes off, I see a good sized seal heading right for us, tracking with the fish and then it goes under the water. oh shirt!
quick change of plans, snug up the drag, bring the fish over quickly, no messing around, get it settled down just off the side of the boat and bring the nose in for an easy netting by Mrs. rogerdodger...beautiful fish that was hooked right under the tip of it's nose in the roof of it's mouth, it just barely grabbed my training hook and being hooked so far forward under the top might have helped me bring the fight to a quick conclusion, an absolutely beautiful 37" hen that tipped the scales at just under 27#....
we get back to trolling towards the bridge, big group of boats there, not 15min after tagging my fish, just at the top end of the big dune, Fish ON....not as big but fighting like crazy and staying deep, so a chinook, this time I quickly hand off the rod and this fish wants to play, under the boat, around the motors, no big runs but had the Mrs. moving all over the boat but no hurry this time, she follows my instructions perfectly, brings the red bead to the rod tip, lifts and steers the fish towards me, bang in the net and we end up drifting under the bridge while bleeding and tagging it. 32" buck that was 15#.
so the first 1W that my wife has tagged and my largest chinook ever. boats were hooking up all over, the rain last night really put them on the bite...cheers, roger
