Word of warning, don't let this experience fool you into getting lax. I often heard that with spoons (I'm putting the kastmaster into that category because it may as well be), the steelhead typically slam them.
Of all the fish I've hooked this year, all but two were on a spoon and of those, only two hit like a train, a few had unmistakable grabs I could feel, and the remaining majority were either almost imperceptible, slight 'ticks', or not even felt at all and I got them simply because I reacted when the line just stopped moving. In other words, don't get lazy and keep paying attention because I think they are indeed soft biters most of the time.
ETA: I gotta admit though, the two of mine that absolutely slammed came about recently and those were probably the most exciting split seconds of my steelhead fishing this year...nearly ripped the rod from my hand it was so unexpected. Well, nearly the most exciting since top honors go to my very first steelhead caught back in February.
