27 inches took my virginity

It hit like a car. I heard steel were soft biters so the bit of jigging action I used prolly set the hook right away starting the fight instantly. Does anyone else jig their lures? I find it really helps when fish are tight lipped.

Word of warning, don't let this experience fool you into getting lax. I often heard that with spoons (I'm putting the kastmaster into that category because it may as well be), the steelhead typically slam them.

Of all the fish I've hooked this year, all but two were on a spoon and of those, only two hit like a train, a few had unmistakable grabs I could feel, and the remaining majority were either almost imperceptible, slight 'ticks', or not even felt at all and I got them simply because I reacted when the line just stopped moving. In other words, don't get lazy and keep paying attention because I think they are indeed soft biters most of the time.

ETA: I gotta admit though, the two of mine that absolutely slammed came about recently and those were probably the most exciting split seconds of my steelhead fishing this year...nearly ripped the rod from my hand it was so unexpected. Well, nearly the most exciting since top honors go to my very first steelhead caught back in February.

Maybe they hit harder later in the season? I've been looking into the r&b spoons and had a few questions. First off does the single hook work as well as a treble? Second, they look really light so I figure they are hard to cast without weight especially on a heavy steel pole n line. How do you rig these spoons? I actually have the same question for little cleos; should I be using a swivel or tie directly on?

for spoons its best not to tie directly to the lure. I suggest adding a split ring to the spoon, then attach a barrel swivel to the split ring.

Single hooks work great, less snags and I personally think it'll hold onto the fish better. But there is a down side, the hook some times penetrates the eye of the fish. So if your fishing a river with only natives id use the trebles. 2/5 oz spoons are easy to cast if your not using extra heavy line. I suggest using 8lb mono.

I fish the spoons like kastmsters but damn the kastmasters are better to me, but I've only used these artificials for trout and caught a few trophy sized trout...but never caught a huge steelhead with an artificial like urs, nice fish!...Im thinkin of doing the same tactics in sandy river

What I like about th kastmasters the way they move drives fish insane because it looks so real when reeling it in, and if it gets somehow tangled, it still flutters when you reel it in, unlike a spinner or a spoon

Ok I see. Thanks for the info. Here I was thinking the split ring on my kastmaster was so I wouldn't need a swivel. I'm a firm believer that less is more. Keep it simple.

i disagree, i tie my line straight to a split ring on the spoon, and same with spinners. I have been known to use a plug snap from time to time but NEVER a swivel.

I know, I know. Hopefully they don't ban him over this!! I mean, I'm surprised they haven't deleted this thread yet, because, not only was I not offended by the title but those two or three other people that may get pissed take presidence over the vast majority. I was hoping to see what that 27 inches was all about.

Congrats, that's a nice fish. When using hardware like spoons and spinners, you'll get the hard hits because it's an aggressive territorially or predatory reaction from the fish as opposed to some some other methods. It's one of the reasons why hardware is on the top of my all-time favorite ways to catch fish. Gotta love the freight train slammo.

@alm21 I remember catching my first big trout of 19 inches with a kastmaster and it was the angriest strike ever...no wonder she was pissed...

I remember fighting steelhead and boy are they strong...In my opinion they are stronger but somewhat comparable to common carps if you wanted to know but those damn steelheads can jump out of the water like no other and can bite your line off so I got to give it to the steelhead...

Nice fish, especially with that kastmaster....what color kastmaster were you using?
