2 hot ladies and a pretty hen

My pretty hen asked me to take her fishing this weekend so of course I obliged. We hit the water at 5:30 and were fishing at legal light (which was no light at all). We landed our first fish pretty quick. It worked my wife over pretty good. Lots of hot runs and surface action. Funny thing is I could barely see to net it. It was a nice egg wagon with a little silver sheen so we bonked it and moved on. We fished the rest of the morning with very little action. All the good holes were taken but I need eggs for the rest of the year so I was determined to find more fish. Just before the ramp I stopped in our last possible spot and had my wife throw a bobber and eggs into a likely slot. I pulled out a steelhead rod and started chucking plugs. Just as I was done retrieving and about to pull the plug out I got nailed and handed my wife the rod to get her tagged out with the two pretty ladies below. This fish was also hot and we had to work it carefully on ten pound line. Lots of good meat and two big trays of eggs.

Chris,

Just finished dinner. Paired this fish with chanterelle risotto and chanterelle alfredo over fettuccine. Thanks for the shrooms! I owe you an Elk float.

Beautiful. Did you keep the dark one for eggs only or meat also?

Cheers

We didn't get any dark fish.

Edit:

If you're wondering if I would keep dark fish just for the eggs....if I don't expect them to cut well I won't take them. The eggs are too far gone at that point to cure in my opinion.

Do you always keep wild fish?

Holy smokes,

90% of coastal retained Chinook are wild. Thats what plug pulling gets you. Big fat wild coastal nooks. Perfect to eat.

The short answer is ... No, there are some circumstances when I would release a wild fish.

But I don't have a problem with any legal harvest of fish.

Have you made it to the coast yet? They are pretty abundant there and that's why we are allowed to retain them.

You can check the MCP document that I linked in a thread recently for info on coastal wild run status/strength, most of our runs are fully seeding the available grounds. Plus going forward we have sliding retention tag limits to protect weak run years right from the start (no mid-run emergency closures) cheers, roger

Oh, "pretty abundant". Sounds promising for stocks.

When you were a fishing guide in Florida, were you not able to retain wild fish? With all the amazing fisheries there, I just assumed it was allowed with some species. Fortunately for Oregon fishing folks, we are able to retain some of them and most are ecstatic when it happens.

Yes, it is! We are a few years into pretty abundant runs!
