Fishing Sandy with 10 lb mono; advise

It's not the line giving you issues. Spinners are not the most aerodynamic lure. Try casting a heavy spoon, or drift gear when it's windy.

    Rubber band bobber stopper

Start with 6-8" of 60lb dacron, tie a uni knot on your main line. Cinch down tight as you please, trim off excess dacron.

    Salmon on the Sandy?

I found this little fella in the cedar creek area the other day. A buddy and I fished all day, between the two of us we went 1-2. Not great, but worth the effort.

    1st steelhead

I usually carry up to four different cures. This is VERY important in my opinion. Sometimes they just want something different. If you don't have a few different cures of eggs bring sand shrimp as your "change up" bait. I use oil scents a lot as well. If you get to a hole you know has fish fish...

    1st steelhead

Nice to meet you yesterday! You'll hook a salmon no problem. Just keep fishing the water you were yesterday and you'll get em.

    Herman Creek Springers

The reason that area (and popular areas near there) fish so well in the summer is because of the water temperature of the Columbia that time of year. The "lagoon" at Herman creek is much colder than the Columbia, so the Summer Steelhead are dipping in to cool down and rest. This time of year the...

    Meldrum bar report.

Looks like an exceptionally nice steelhead to me. Nice!

    Rapids?

My experience is fish holding in heavier water are better biters as well.

    Want good cheap bait?

The ones I do are un-cured, so I'd imagine the refrigerator shelf life is not too long. I make small batches, and use them up pretty quick. If there is any left over at the end of the day I just throw it back in the freezer. They are durable and hold up well if frozen multiple times. I just...

    I've always used raw.

Will this work for winter steelhead??

To make that float ride properly you will probably need more weight than what is pictured. The float should float vertically once it's in the water, and the water line should be about at the chartreuse line.

    Rod question

If I had to pick one size for all of my steelhead needs I'd pick a 9'6" 8-15lb (ish) rod.

    Want good cheap bait?

I figured I'd post this up in hopes it'll help a few folks out this season. These are incredibly simple and cheap baits to make, and they work very, very well. Start with store bought prawns. Next, remove the shell and cut them up into bait size pieces. Now, these could be fished just...

    Sandy River winter steelhead challenge!

I agree 100% I went on a few trips with Ed when I first started just to hone my skills and learn some new tricks. It was by far the best thing I did to cut the learning curve down. Plus, Ed is a super fun guy to fish with! And the scenery and raft float he does is incredible.

    Bobber set up

I run a shorter leader if fishing heavy-fast water or pocket type water. On average I run 30-36" leader. A longer leader will give your bait a larger radius to move around your weight, but that can be a bad thing if you're fishing a fast flowing 10' long pocket that's 5' deep and 4' wide . You...
